Most people seem to analyse electric vehicles on the basis that each household will own one or more of them. I don't think that is the long-term business plan. I think the plan will be most households access vehicle via an Uber-style service and only wealthy households or households with particular needs will own a vehicle. Once you view the technology through that business model, electric vehicles become more viable — albeit with tremendous changes to the role of vehicles and car manufacturers.

LOL - in the real world, try just getting a space near your home, let alone close to a lamppost, that are already few and far between. Street lamps outside every house perhaps ? Even though some authorities have trialed turning street lights off to save money.
Then think about the cost of converting all said posts, Hopefully someone wont come along and remove your cable for scrap.

This really needs to be addressed and thought out if theres any chance of success.
I think car ownership will change, with more on demand cars rather than actual ownership, if driverless cars become available this will encourage it.
A company in Phoenix - Waymo - run electric, driverless vehicles, providing a taxi service within a 50 mile radius.

Cable theft will of course happen the more these cars get taken into use, cable theft on the railways and utility systems including BT have been rife for years. A street full of cables is always going to attract the tealeafs. Be interesting to find out how many offences of theft are happening now.

The thing that concerns me how are people who live in terraced streets going to charge there cars ?or people who live in flats ?i can see a lot of charging cables being nicked , until we totally rethink our energy infrastructure electric cars will only be available to the rich , most terraced houses really on a really old electricity infrastructure some have supply cables dating back to the 1930s rated at 63 A we just dont have the infrastructure for charging and dont have the capacity with the existing electricity network
this is correct, a friend of mine brought a tesler, (he does live in a posh area) but even here he had to get his neighbour's to agree to have the supply updated.
