That would be the thing you heard fall into the door then. Search the forum on this subject mate, someone did a thread about that very thing.
It's caused by (mainly) the glass and mechanism getting so stiff to operate that it causes stress and strain to the mountings and lift mechanism. That anchor piece you've found would've originally been riveted onto the door frame.
