DIY rust treatment......

Anybody had a go at this with decent results?

My little Franny has a little surface rust around the sills, and wheels arches.

I'm considering the following:

-Treating area with Hammerite rust remover gel and wire brush/Rust remover pad
-sand with wet n dry paper
-prime with grey anti rust primer (wet n dry paper to smooth after each coat)
-use matching paint colour
-clear laquer spray to finish

I know it wont be the best finish but would get the car through til end July/September before I could get her fully treated and sprayed professionally.

I can hear her squeal when the rain hits her rust spots :arghh:

Thoughts?
 
Hi @l3ggy is the rust showing blistering on the outside painted surface or just on the inside? If outside will need some more work that just treating from the outside as the rust will soon return. The front sills get pebble-dashed from the wheels but also a fair bit gets behind the arch liners and sits there fetering.

Good short term solution is to have the arch liners out and have a good clean out and treat with Waxoyl or similar.

I'm using POR 15 at the moment.A small starter kit will cost about £20.Contains a degreaser,a metal prep mild acid and a small 4oz can of paint.It covers really well and sets like iron. So far I've done all my new 4 callipers ,the carriers,the vulnerable mounting points for the ARBs given the new ARB supports a protective coat and still got half the tin left. All two coats each.

Looks good, expensive?
 
Can be a bit expensive if you intend doing large areas but at £20 for the starter kit I would think many of the vulnerable areas could be sorted.
 
The more POR 15 you buy the cheaper it gets! It can actually be painted right over rust after removing the loose bits as it forms a chemical bond and neutralizes the rust and bonds to the metal. Most street rodders I know use it with great results. JIM
 
Bilt hamber stuff gets amazing reviews too .

Rust proofing is high up my list as the sills and wings are looking a bit ropey
 
Vactan for me as well used it on the under side brilliant stuff:) then finished of with black Hammerite spray:whistle:
