So a little update. We fully assembled the front brakes also assembled both rear arms. In between we’ve being throwing ideas around on getting the 6 speed gearbox to line up.

Front brakes looking tidy.

rear arms also done.

BMW have stopped doing the brake line clips now so we’re trying out a new type of clip.
551587C7-1554-4EC8-9D86-FA18F3F0C202.jpeg

Now the 6 speed gearbox fits perfectly up against the engine. We’ve had to change the clutch type to a 22spline disc to suit the gearbox shaft, normally on the z3’s it’s a 10 spline. Now we’ve set the correct height for the gearbox we need to gain 30mm. The bracket holes line up but it pushes the gearbox too high.
The green circles were fitting a reduced bush by 10mm and the blue circles fitting a 20-30mm dia spacers on the bracket. If we weren’t in a lockdown we could get this bracket custom made but for now this is the best solution we have. The shaft will go away for shortening along with the linkage.

Also in the background the diff is still being discussed, it’s not clear what size LSD unit is needed so lots of measurements are being taken.

Were still having issues sourcing new drive shafts. We tried a set off eBay but they had small case inner CV joints so didn’t fit. We then got a pair from Euros and the ABS ring was 10mm away from the sensor, so we’ve decided to have a go at restoring a set. BMW do a repair kit so looking forward to seeing what comes with it.

One very floppy drive shaft

Removing the dust cap, in hindsight here I should of removed the outer so I could access the circlip.

Very watery old grease.

This is one shaft. Both joints use the same size bearing and cages so don’t panic getting them mixed.

bearing all measuring the same.

joint close up. Just popped it out.

This coming week I’m hoping to get the gearbox permanently in. Waiting on the bushes and a new clutch kit to arrive.

Re the clips @Lee - why waste an opportunity to use a cable tie, I spotted some nice red ones there. Go on you know you want to =))

Front brakes are looking nice and beefy - what are the calipers from - e46 330?

Little update: still waiting on various parts.

The diff came back with a new crush sleeve fitted but no new LSD unit. We struggled to find company’s with the correct fitment so this will need some more time plus very few company’s keep stock in the uk. So we cleaned it up and gave it paint. Also fitted the new speedo sensor bracket.

These really don’t like the harsh weather.

Looking all shinny again.

We also collected the custom made linkage for the 6 speed conversion. This fits a peach now with all gears in the right places. Now a good few mm shorter.

can’t argue with that alignment.

sits lovely in the car now.
BB0A90D9-C8F0-4F8C-86FC-4369C4CB6149.jpeg

we also fitted the shorted gearbox bushes to gain us some height on the bracket leaving us only needing a small spacer.

72FB136D-750C-4FC6-9BFD-6398CF18D81B.jpeg

so now we’re awaiting the custom spacers being machined up. Along with the custom prop shaft, should both be early next week. We’re also waiting on the rear drive shaft bits from BMW, they’re having supply issues from Germany but won’t share any more details.

Getting there :)

Your Auntie Merkel has heard of your antics with German cars so ordered the parts be held at customs in France insisting they're picked up personally and subject to heavy tariff but only when GB allows normal flights, you've
had your jabs and completed the mountain of paperwork . =))

Roy.

ps; shouldn't be long now.

Under normal circumstances that would actually sound far fetched but in 2021 quite plausible o_O:banghead:

Measure twice, cut once springs to mind seeing that!

Starting to get twitchy watching it come together again but patience is virtue and all that!

I can confirm parts from Germany are taking longer, parts ordered around 4 weeks ago from AutoDoc took about 15 days to arrived just a up-graded water pump, thermostat + housing and new belts all items were in stock, parts were dispatched within a day,
when emailed AutoDoc about late delivery they said COVID + Brexit added up to late delivery 😂

It’s been a joke getting stuff from the fatherland at the moment, three weeks and counting. Can’t wait to see how the new box pans out.
@Lee is it the whole lsd pack and assembly you’ve got to replace? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283270471434
Yeah that’s the kiddy. The diff guy said there was too much play in it. Since he’s rebuilt it I can’t get it to clonk by hand, I’m hoping it’s ok now.

So finally a nice big update. Been driving me crazy waiting for parts to arrive. Also the clutch company took two weeks to get me the kit.

First thing we did was test fit the custom prop shaft. All went smoothly so we could remove the gearbox and give it a good service.

Because this is a very custom one off job it pays to make sure things fit. We offered the 22spline clutch up to the gearbox shaft and tried out the flywheel. With this style gearbox the shaft engages the flywheel not the pilot bearing in the crank.

clutch kit finally here.

First thing I fitted was the flywheel. Here you can see the bearing made into the flywheel.

on goes the alignment tool
9D0F7A7C-7917-41CE-943E-1F17A1809D74.jpeg

then the pressure plate to hold it all in.

Looks pretty good for an E46 clutch kit :)

Next up we serviced the gearbox and replaced the seals. Oil was very old

Input seal. Old one was weeping.
EAAC404B-CAB4-4A99-9BF5-E661A92F69E5.jpeg

Then all new internals. Pivot arm, pivot pin, release bearing. You’ll see here a big thing that’s different, the 22 spline shaft hence why we use the E46 flywheel.
77DED6C9-082E-4B92-83B3-01845DFEBC53.jpeg

She went in without a hitch. Everything lined up perfectly. Plenty of room in the tunnel.
C5738A80-D743-4345-A8ED-2F90A3AA59B0.jpeg

Worth noting at this stage we went down the spacer route with the bracket. These will be swapped out for a 130mm long solid spacer, the reason for this is two round spacers will point load round the threads and it needs to be spread out along the bracket and rail.

We also reached out to BMW for a drive shaft rebuild kit and I can’t say I’m happy with what you get for the price. We can’t even complete the rebuild with what they supply. We’re still missing the spline end cover and can’t find anyone who can supply one. So for now we’ve cleaned up a better condition pair of shafts to get Dino going.
DF845A0B-FE5F-4A7D-8AFC-4881A2990E3B.jpeg

Finally after we had lunch we got the rest of the rear end together, with all the new bolts it looks amazing.

we were dying to get the prop in to make sure it all lines up perfectly and it didn’t disappoint.

this was a solid 10hour day in the garage today. Least we can say this week wasn't totally wasted. Oh one last thing we did, we wanted to check the starter motor worked ok with the E46 flywheel... we were left with our ears ringing we totally forgot the S50 manifolds were so loud.

First 6 speed gearbox done in the shed

can’t believe it’s the same car under there!

so glad it all fits and the clutch was correct- was dreading it didn’t fit!

Brave man starting that up in a small space with no silencers, its loud enough with the cat and silencer on, must have been like an earthquake!

Ps loving the trike in the background :cool:hope you let you let your little man use it too:whistle:

I’ve now lost count of how many different cars parts have gone into this Z over the last 10 years. Not only is hosting Z3 parts parts from at least 10 other Z3, now also a Z4 box o_O

Will have to get a sticker saying ‘proud to be a bitsa’ next to the Zedshed sticker (I do get a sticker this this time right @Lee ?!)
