I don't know where this aligning of wheel centre caps arose

Amongst some of the more OCD of the community, I guess.

It's the manufacturers' fault, they made the caps alignable, and one thing led to another. And once you start, you can't help noticing how many are misaligned. Used to put them straight back when I was servicing/tyre changing for a living, can't remember anyone noticing.
