So here we are 2 years later, and have you caught up? Me and our new neighbour were talking about this same subject over dinner last night. I have a relatively low mileage E85 Z4 but I don't know if these kits are still produced.

Tony.

And how to get them into the UK. Shame really. I’m not at all keen on chopping up a Z3 to make a Cobra or Ferrari. But chopping up a Z4 to make a Z8 really appeals to me.

Wasn't sure which section to put this in! Perhaps we need a kit car section?

Full story here: http://www.carscoops.com/2008/06/bmw-z8-replica-kit-using-bmw-z4.html

"We don’t know how this BMW Z8 replica might look in person, but it could have fooled us in these pictures. Created by a company named “Car Kit” in Alabama, the BMW Z8 replica pack is based on the current BMW Z4 and it consists of a 5-piece fiberglass bodykit that includes front-clip, rear-clip, trunk lid, outer door panels and the hood along with front and rear lights. The bodykit costs $5,995 or €3,840 while the front and rear light lenses without projectors or bulbs, $1,000 or €640 ($125 a piece)."

Looks great to me, if I was retired I would be tempted to have a go at this, very reasonable pricewise. And a decent 3.0 donor like this one for £4K, so you have the basis of a project for £9K - even if you spend £2K on other bits, you still have a decent fun roadster that is eminently useable and cheap to run (insurance/tax wise), all for just over £11K. Got to be worth a punt and if you did it well, I think you could recoup your investment. Just my opinion of course.

Having re-built 2 MG's, a VW Camper, 2 Lotus Cortinas, one replica Ferrari and 25% through another I can tell you that you WILL spend £10000 on top of the kit (£5000) and the donor (£5000 +) so in the case of a Z8 replica on a decent Z4 3.0 about £20000. If you could find the kit anymore that is.

Having said that a really well-done Z8 replica would fetch £35-40k and will be as rare as rocking horse poop in the future.

I stress the "really well done" part on a good donor otherwise, crap in-crap out.

These are not kit cars, rather a re-body of a good car. Early kit cars where the whole car was a bitza made in a shed from old cortina and herald bits, were not worth much and some were very badly done (but the owners were pleased as punch), what is in discussion above is a very different proposition and well worth doing.

My 250swb Spyder Replica is no expense spared, super-detailed and high-quality build (sell for about £30k in this quality) and the 250 California Replica I am building now will be the same (sell for £60-80k which shocks me but they do sell). You can drive these all day long every day as opposed to the real ones a $20 million that sit in a garage all their lives. Mind you Chris Evans did lend his to James May for the day for a drive and you see them racing around Goodwood 6" (or closer) to another £10 million+ car.

If, like me, you enjoy the build process and creating something yourself, then go for it. If you are perfectly happy with your Z3/4 then stick with it, If you are happy to modify or restore your Z3/4 to concourse condition then go for it too, if you are happy with an untidy runabout for the wind in your hair then go far that too.

I am happy whichever way (but happier with the replica!).

Each to their own and criticism of someone's passion serves no purpose other than to make the critic look foolish.

My 2-cents worth! Let battle commence :ymdevil:=))

I love some of the kit cars…. My old M is being turned into one as we speak and I would love a Cobra - I cant afford the real thing.

The z8 is beautiful and if the kit is right then it can be too…. My old M had a kit on it that made it like no other and I loved it!!!

As mentioned…. Do what makes you happy
