Bluebird, it’s time to look under the sill covers.

The last M.O.T. brought an advisory of corrosion on the sills, so today was the day to get the covers off and see what was lurking underneath. @Nodzed had kindly offered his time, help and the facilities at the Zedshed West. Here goes

This is what we found on the off side. A couple of patches of corrosion, but nothing that had eaten through. Niall got busy with the wire brush attachment on the grinder and soon got it into shape. Next up was the Kurust treatment to stabilise the metal

The next job was to give it a good clean.

Next up was the Gravigard protector.

Then a nice coat of silver to tidy it up and get it looking like new.

Next up, the hapless apprentice was let loose with a paint brush to apply a good coat of Waxoyl.

I gave the arch liners a clean while they were out.

A bit of Waxoyl here and there does no harm.

We gave the inside of the sill covers a couple of coats, then put it all back together.
The near side corrosion worse much worse, which makes sense because that’s the side which goes through the muddy puddles and the like.

The same process was done on this side of the car and then re assembled.
This was very handy for getting the paint to dry between coats.

I’m so glad we got this done today, it will keep the corrosion at bay for a couple more years. I would recommend everyone to have a look under the sill covers and see what’s lurking there. A massive thank you to Niall for his time and help and bloody hard work today. It was a long, but very rewarding day. Cheers Niall, you’re a star.

Nice job all round, they were not that bad after all, bet you were expecting worse. Similar job that was done on Gary's from Worcester when I was down the shed, one side per week so you did well getting both sides done in the day.

It was a very long day Colb, but very worthwhile.
 
Nothing really, if the MOT tester knew what they were looking at they would know that the sill cover is merely "bodywork" and as such not a testable item.

What did the MOT person see that prompted an advisory in the first place?
This is what he could see. The cover is the right hand side of the picture. It’s muddy but good. The corrosion is underneath.

It wasn't the sill covers that the tester gave the advisory for, they were fine and not very old, it was the inner sills, the rust had spread out from under the sill cover and was visible, hence the mention, good call IMHO as it prompted the removal of the outers and the inners caught in time before more damage was done.
 
In that case I would agree.
