Only ever been to Amsterdam once Mike and that was on our first journey to Florida from Manchester via Schipoll ( hope I spelled that correctly) so we didn't see much, probably saw more on "To Hull and back" with Del Boy. I imagine the places where you've worked are very isolated and coming home to a city is good for you?

Schiphol opened on 16 September 1916 as a military airbase. The end of the First World War also saw the beginning of civilian use of Schiphol Airport and the airport eventually lost its military role completely. By 1940, Schiphol had four asphalt runways at 45-degree angles. The airport was captured by the German military that same year and renamed Fliegerhorst Schiphol. The airport was destroyed through bombing but at the end of the war the airfield was restored quickly. In 1949 it was decided that Schiphol was to become the primary airport of the Netherlands.
Schiphol's name is derived from a former fortification named Fort Schiphol which was part of the Stelling van Amsterdam defence works. Before 1852, the Haarlemmermeerpolder in which the airport lies was a large lake with some shallow areas.
There are multiple stories of how the place got its name. The most popular story is that in the shallow waters sudden violent storms could claim many ships. This was the main reason for reclaiming it. In English, Schiphol translates to 'Ship Grave',

I too hate London. I have to go to Ebury Street near Victoria Station every 3 Months, lovely buildings but a hell of a lot of S--T Holes. I find it strange that even away from the Centre how many people there are, is nearly every one in London on benefits as they all seem to be walking around at all times of the day. It is a place that apart from work i will never visit hate the place. I would sooner pay more and go to Barcelona. But i suppose if i had family there then i would have to. I'm with you totally on that one Tony! Nice for a quick visit but we're full on country folk, can't wait to get the mortgage paid up and move somewhere more green and animal friendly!I realise there are people who like big towns and cities mate but they're not for me. It's a good job some are at home there or the countryside would be packed.

We did visit London for a Weekend about 5 years ago and to be fair we enjoyed it but a short visit is enough for us. It was nice to get home!

A day trip would be too much for me. Bit like going to Skeggy. Good idea at the time but when you arrive you wish you had gone somewhere else

You would love where we live, surrounded by fields, only 66 dwellings. No shop, no bus but we do have a village hall, a church and a stables for @jue1. Sadly pub closed years ago so a 4mile round trip to get a nice real ale, but lovely on a hot summers evening. The only city I hate over here is Rotterdam.

We had a great weekend and agree avoid the centre full of damn tourists. Our son has a flat at Putney and is a very nice community, most major stores within walking distance and parks.
Trip to Kew Gardens yesterday and today the IWM and London Pool which was fairly full.
Strange sensation yesterday as we were watching Trooping the Colour on TV and the flypast and prob a minute later we looked out of the window and the Red Arrows flew over the flat.
