Hello All

Came Very close to getting rid of the Z at the weekend!

For some time I've fancied having a neo classic GT, something like an 850, or a pre 1990 M6.

Last week, I SORN'd the Z ready for the onset of autumn, it was only then that I spotted a rather nice looking 928 for sale. So, the next day I re-taxed the Z and made an appointment to go and view the 928. My son and I had a good drive over to Guildford in the Z and it felt good to stretch its legs again, always being surprised how well it it kept up with current performance models.

We took the 928 out for a test drive and the sound of the V8 on its own was almost enough to cement the deal. So, we left Guildford and agreed that I would get back to the seller with deposit details once I had spoken with my wife. It was only after jumping back in the Z and driving home that it reconfirmed what a good car the Z is, throttle response, performance, handling, pretty much everything in the Z was better (excluding soundtrack and practicality). So, I came up with the plan to have the best of both and keep the Z and get the 928, even if it would take some negotiations with my wife!

However, Just before I was due to phone the dealer on Monday, my wife called me to say that she had just been made redundant! This obviously puts any unnecessary extravagances on hold, but now the excitement of driving the 928 has subdued, I think I may of dodge a bullet. If I had of got the 928, I have a sneaky feeling it would always be the Z that I still wanted to go out in as it is such a great car, leaving the 928 redundant.

In a long winded way this leads me to a question, if you were to have another car (around the same value) instead of the Z, what would it be and why ?

A quick photo of the 928 with the Z in the background:

Ooooh that's tough! Same money as my Zed? Got to be my Ford Fiesta RS Turbo. Much maligned against the opposition of the day but when banging round the "B" roads the "opposition" were knowhere to be seen, miles behind in the rear view mirror;)Loved it and miss it.:(

I liked your post, but sorry to hear that your wife has lost her job, hopefully a temporary measure! Temptation is a wonderful thing, thankfully you hadn't put a deposit down on the initial visit! Maybe you'll be able to get a 928 sometime soon. Best wishes.

David.

PS Don't forget to hold o to the Zed!!

Just look how much prettier the Zed is sat in the background. Enough said I think!

Good question and I have no answer, the attraction for me is the top down experience with an old school retro look and feel with modern reliability.I can't think of another car that can tick my boxes like the z3 can .And I'm not afraid to use it or treat it like a museum piece

I don't think there is another sports car out there that equates to VFM in the way that a Zed does, in terms of build quality, looks and price - they are so undervalued!!

Totally agree and add to that I think that Porker is an ugly pig compared to a Z3 and even to a Z4 too. Just my own thoughts you understand!

Yep your Zed looks stunning next to that porker and from what you have said about your Zed I would keep it. I hope your wife is not out of the loop for too long and maybe revisited another interest later. A plus you have re taxed your Zed though a nice drive out somewhere nice with the wife to cheer her up

My s***'s custom!
For me it came down to a choice between a Lotus Elise and my zed. A friend of mine picked up an Elise a few weeks after I got the zed and I made the right choice. Don't get me wrong, the Elise is amazing but I couldn't live with it long term. As a driving machine it's great but the zed has it beaten hands down as a sports tourer.
It's also got it beaten in a race too....apparently....on private roads.

Hello All,

Thanks for the comments, I'm sure the redundancy thing will only be a temporary blip.

Back to the important/interesting stuff! If I couldn't have a Z, the only other thing I could think of would be an SLK, ideally one of the V8 AMG variants, but even then I still don't think they look as good as any of the Z's. As for Lotus, great cars, but as I'm over 6'5 tall they are just too small..

The only other car which would tempt me would be an E46 M3 convertible. I drove a 928 may years ago and was distinctly underwhelmed.

I bought a 77 944 thinking it was what I wanted but it took my then 9 yr old granddaughter Trinity to open up my eyes to the z3. Now a young fellow has made an offer on the 944 so it's leaving and the TOO car hopefully will be arriving in Canada! JIM

The only WORD in your post Renaud that made me stop and think was INSTEAD, so it's a no brainer for me cos there's no other motor that I would trade my Z for, not even my old Escort Mk1 RS2000 which I would like to own again but only along with my Z, don't get me wrong cos there's a lot of really nice cars out there, but I've had my Z for nearly 9yrs now and I'm sort of attached to it, marriage made in heaven if you like. HaHaHaHa, even the wife loves it, well a bit anyway, I think. Soon find out cos when she asked me what I want for Chrimbo this year I'm going to say a Raid steering wheel, now that will tell me for sure how much she thinks of my second wife. No!!!!!!!!!!! =))

I'm currently looking for a Merc 500SL. Don't know what will happen when I find one for the money I want to pay though with regards to my Zed.
It will be tough to sell my old 230ce but that looks the most likely outcome.

It's not a good idea to ask that on a Zed forum! Because nobody will trade the Zed! But if you ask that on a Porsche forum , they will agree the change.
I will trade my Zed for a widebody , 6 cyl, same combo!
