About the door locks..............

Yesterday, I bought a new battery and installed it into my z. (First step towards putting it on the road). I noticed that the old one had a small 90 degree elbow in a drain hole at the top side of the battery. I removed this when taking the old battery out so it didn't break (remember I said this). It had a drain tube attached to it. I bought the new battery and returned the old one (core) at the same time. When installing the new one, I first inserted the tube (elbow) into the drain hole since this tube was inserted into the face closest to the firewall and I thought it best to insert the tube before placing the battery in the car as it was easy to do at that time rather than to try to work getting it in with only a small space between the firewall and the battery. As usual, I get into trouble when I "think". When I inserted this tube or elbow, as I lowered the heavy battery into its compartment, it came into contact with the firewall and snapped the tube in half. Wonderful!. I can buy another tube like this at the auto store. I must not forget about it because a small hose attaches to it to provide a drain for excess battery fluid. I don't want to corrode the car.
Then............ I said to the wife, jump in and we'll take a ride around the block. I can't go much further since I don't have it insured yet. I got in the car and went to unlock her side. First I looked for a door lock switch to unlock her side. Can't find one. No door lock switch??????????? No problem. I'll just reach over and open her door from the inside. OH YEAH???????????????????? When I pulled the door handle, the door lock popped up but snapped back down as soon as I let it go. Tried it several times. Same result. How can you not be able to unlock a door from the inside by opening the handle? I've never seen this in any car in my life. I had to roll down her window, take the keys out of the ignition, hand them to her, and have her unlock the door from the outside with the key. What a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AM I MISSING SOMETHING??????????????

It should be central locking that opens the passenger lock. I's suspect if it makes the sound when you open the door lock that something has come loose inside the door. Next stage would be to take the door card off and have a look.

Hi Frankie, that is exactly what happened on my car last year, the passenger(left) door locking solenoid failed. I changed it and all is well. If you remove the door card you can disconnect the rod from the solenoid to the catch assembly and lock the door manually till you can replace the solenoid. Hope the car ran well as far as it went.

You guys just have no patience, you have to assume it will not go right first time. plan for the worst and hope for the best is my moto, that way you never get frustrated, and the job goes smoothly, if not at a fast pace.

Count the number of teeth on the bottom of the zipper once the old one is out to find centre. Find the centre on the new window bottom and mate the two together. Have an assistant on the outside to support the window as you progress. Should get you in first try. Now remember this only is my theory as I've never done this operation. Putting the new window out in the sun first should make it more easily handled and good luck with the divorce proceedings if you use your wife as a helper. You'll probably get the Zed for sure. Never an offence Z. You can ask me anything on your mind. Been very busy lately and laid up for a couple of days by old age. Will try to get one today as the sun is shining. Leaving for Alberta for a couple of weeks because I'm having snow withdrawal, hope it's not all melted by the time I get there. No, not taking the Zed, my wife won't let me drive that far on my meds so I told her I'd stop taking them. And then the fight started!! . JIM

Now its a funny thing that you said this. My wife always criticized me about losing my temper when things aren't going well. I've taken a different approach now. I know that when I'm doing something, there's a very good chance I've had to do it before at some time in the past, as I always try to do most things, with the car or around the house. What she doesn't know is that it is because of these past experiences that I get annoyed. Having done these things before, and sometimes many times before, I usually have the experience on how things should go. If a job is going poorly, I'm upset because I already know how easily they COULD have gone. Now.............I know that if I'm having trouble, with all the experience I have, that SHE has no chance in hell of getting it done. Sooooooo.... my new approach to her now is to feign surrender and suggest SHE TRY IT. Naturally, she thinks its going to be a snap, and starts in trying it. Before long, she gets very frustrated and can't for the life of her understand why she's having any problems at all. She soon gives up and leaves it to me, hoping I won't ask her to try it again. The difference with us guys is that we CAN'T give up and have to complete the work or find a different solution. Or modify things. (Or on very rare occasions, commit the piece of work to its grave.) I'm going to try the same approach with the window that I use when putting in a new timing belt. I mark the living shxx on everything and just copy the same thing on the new item. This works so well with timing belts, I never even bother to set the engine to TDC before starting. Just a waste of time. Hasn't failed me in 40 years. Frankie
