Any suggestions, I’m looking to fit a super sprint cat back to me z3 2.8.
The front of the exhaust including cat is new, so the only bit of rust/old exhaust will be the silencer box circled in the attached (assuming that’s what it is).
what are my options? Find a good-nick secondhand one and fit it when I do the super sprint.
Or can I do away with it all together, or will it be too noise?
or not worry, fit the super sprint and wait for it to fail?
Cheers

I am not 100% sure on what I say, but this is supposed to be more of a resonator and less of a silencer.
Better be sure about what it does, or else you may end with a very disturbing noise from the exhaust.
or not, if you are into that stuff...

That’s my concern not 100% what it’s there for.
not looking for a thundering loud exhaust.
Thanks for the reply.

i made my own, and replaced all of what you pictured. I have a generic straight through system from the cat back.
its not noisy, its quite a sweet deep sound, but i do have a drone at 60mph which is annoying.

that picture of the circled part is indeed a resonator, and they are complete 1pc unit with the rest of exhaust.

pic of mine before/ after.. although when fitted to car i added a twin outlet to make it more stock appearing

I cut the resonator out of mine and had a mandrel bent bit of pipe welded in.

It's a non standard angle but I can't remember the angle.

I think I got it from this lot

https://exhaustpartsuk.com/product-category/mandrel-bend/

had the bend put in a 1mtr length, then cut to suite. Used the offcuts to make a pair of tailpipes!

pipe is off the car, so will try to Remember to photo it tomorrow.

Doesn't sound much different.

Removed this section a few times when they fail from various zeds. No huge noise change.

I have a 97 m52 with the single pipe and resonator delete.

It adds a little sound, if not a bit of drone from 1800 to 2000 rpm. Not loud by any standards at all. A little extra burble when foot comes off the gas.
Cost £100 at the local exhaust shop and I needed more work than your are proposing. I would also add that my emissions test wasn’t as easy as the stock setup but it managed to get itself under the thresholds

@Stevo7682 has a resonator delete on his 2.8tu engine which has the dual pipe and dual cat setup which I’d suggest makes even more noise with the res delete. Again, nothing wild but certainly more volume and a little extra burble when the foot steps of the gas.

if you want a bit more volume to your tastes it might be best to get a custom exhaust made up. Cat back will work and the exhaust shop should be able to tailor the sound to your needs. Probably more cost effective as well.

Cheers, good amount of info there 👍. Think I’ll just fit the super sprint and once the resonator finally crumbles away get something made up.

I believe the super sprint exhaust is a cat back where the resonator box is already deleted. It’s a straight pipe from the cat to the back box. No need for extra chopping.

when ordering, triple check you are getting the right one as there are multiple versions with ‘sport’ and ‘race’ versions of each.

Thanks, already purchased second hand off someone on here. Doesn’t look long enough to go past the resonator, but could be wrong.

HELP!
So I’ve got the old exhaust off, but the pipe off the Cat doesn’t look right. Has some welded this short section on?
Should I cut it off and fit the sleeve that came with the super sprint? Don’t want to cut anything too short!

My advice is go to an exhaust shop. Take your back box, some new mounting rubbers for the back box and one for the subframe and they will weld and created the cat back for you. Worth every penny.

If you can pop the exhaust back on for now, that’ll help with the neighbours.

The new shiny thing wouldn’t let me! Managed to fudge it, but will be booking in at an exhaust shop shortly.
Cheers
