It's becoming increasingly difficult to get garages to do small favours like changing over a set of springs. It was also clear how lazy some of my local garages were. So myself @pgunter @GazHyde @Oldguysrule chipped in and bought a spring compressor. Which I'm very impressed with its build. It's very chunky and solid. Now we have the capability to change springs easily and safely instead of the manual method.

Also with this jack I'm having another attachment made to push out the old bushes on the beams, again this reduces the rebuild costs and speeds up the time of a build. I wont be surprised if we can now do a whole zed rear chassis in one day.

So this weekend it's going to get really tested. Gaz is having Eibachs fitted to his Z4 and Paul is having Eibachs fitted to his Z3. If we get time we will fit some H&R springs to @Shortie_gal zed too.

Just watched the video of the operation of this tool on the Machine Mart site.Looks well worth the £120 price tag.
Just paid £350 to have 4 new springs fitted to my volvo so a good buy.

This should get a lot of use! Changing springs over is a 10 minute job once they are off the car, but driving around on a Saturday for nearly 2 hours trying to find someone to do it is plain ludicrous.

Next up we need to club together for one of these :D

I know man, I've been staying clear of the big equipment for that reason. You know where we are if you need to use it :)
Greatly appreciated, my screwfix ones do the job but im always concious that they might try to kill me! :D

shame but most garages are so busy and not privately owned that the old bung the lad a tenner stuff has disappeard. even the guys i know who have their own places are just plain not interested in doing anything like that anymore.

Those Costa machines are like liquid crack dispensers!

Be careful @Lee, bushes can take up to 5 tonnes of pressure before they will move, this may well exceed the limits of your spring compressor. I bought an hydraulic press to change bushes with, at 6 tonne pressure the machine was built like a tank in order to handle the strain.

hold fire on the costa, you never know I may be able to help out there, I will keep an eye out on what comes through the door, at the moment we are refitting Shell and BP stations, some of these have an M&S inside, coffee machines might come out too:) Does anyone need a cardboard compactor? I even have a dust extractor for wood cutting going begging.

A good buy Lee, speaking from experience as. a man who had a front Spring off a P205 in the face in 1992 it's not a nice thing.;) I'm lucky in so far as I can use the one at work.

Tony.

You have an eagle eye! The one ton wont cut it at all, I've tried. But it did when you soften the bush (stuck a few 5mm holes through the bush). Or my 10ton ram in my workshop at work will fit in nicely.

I have one, they are brilliant. I use it to press bushes out as well with some well positioned wooden chocks. Got mine in the VAT free sale on Clarke stuff
Other uses include using it to break the bead on tyres to get them off the wheels =))

It's not all glamour and glitz over at the #ZedShed you know. Today we started off with a bit of carpeting and general house keeping :D

The shed floor is covered with old office carpet tiles so makes it easy to replace them when they get dirty.

I would be interested to know how big the ZedShed is.
It's basically a single garage, but a little wider than the average I'd guess. Pic with Zed to show the scale.
