On Saturday i went to Birmingham to pick up a Z3M, unfortunately the work was too much for me as listed below so i walked away from the opportunity. However people on here might be more able to take the challenge on.

https://www.tejsspecialistcars.co.uk/vehicle/1998-s-reg-bmw-z3m-roadster/

It's a 1998 (S) Z3M with 105k on the clock. It has part service history, a gap between 2006 and 2011 however it has stamps for every other year regardless of mileage.
The seller will take offers at £9,500 for it, maybe less, and he does take credit cards if that helps.

- The gearbox pins need swapping out, its a struggle to get into 5th gear and when out, stays below 5th. It's a £3 fix but gearbox out
- The roof is missing the interior liner that covers the bars, that needs adding
- engine has flaking paint on the rocker cover and the vanos chrome is peeling, but this is cosmetic, the engine had no other visible issues
- Alloys have benefited from a powder coat and the tires are all still quite meaty
- Bodywork is in really good condition, bar 2 areas, front drivers door has some bubbling rust under the paint and near the passenger sills
- Underneath, certain components like anti roll bar and suspension arms need stripping away, sanding back the rust and painting, but nothing is corroded or falling off, just needs TLC
- it has Bilstein dampers on the front, think it's stock springs though?
- interior drivers seat bolster has broken
- all electrics work when i saw it and everything was present and accounted for. Including arm rest tape deck and boot mounted CD changer

I wanted this car, but I would have put every penny into buying it and then needing some time to save up and do the work.
The car is drive-able but the gear pin issue put me off.

Tej was a great guy, really helpful and wasn't angry when i chose to walk away from it. So i highly recommend him.
In addition, he'll throw in a toy version of the car for free, haha.
If anyone has some queries, i'd be happy to try and answer, if not, reach out to Tej if you are interested in the car. Just MOT'd and centrally based if you want to get the train in. £4 taxi from Birmingham New Street

That might be ok at around 9k.
Unless it’s been done I’d be budgeting for proper bills on these:
VANOS
Rear subframe bushes
Boot floor welds

Otherwise sounds pretty rust free.
The roof lining might not have been fitted to such an early model- on non M models it was only fitted after the facelift. Not sure on the M models.

As it over the magical 100k mark mileage was its not ‘collectors’ material.
I think the big issue these have is thw competition from the Z4M which are starting around 12k...they are now the last proper M cars without turbos and still have hydraulic steering...of course they don’t have THAT rear end but it’s a tough choice when they cheap now..

@Nodzed has a properly sorted one up for sale (although it’s been known to be overtaken by a Yaris on occasion..)

That sounds like a very cheap ///M with not many issues if he will take 9.5k for it. They are old cars and will need some work doing to get them upto standard. Most of them fixes are pretty straight forward for a lot of guys on here. Quite a lot suffer with the gearbox pin issue and it's no problem using the car with it, you just have to make sure your selecting gears properly and it would not be a fix that needs doing straight away. With a bit of money spent it will be a cheap ///M and still cheaper than some of the prices people want for a lot worse. Just a shame it's a little to much work and money if you are already stretched to buy it :arghh:

@g8jka if i had £11k and the car was £9k which i reckon you could push to pay for it, so long as it's a cash buy, then i would have probably taken it because it was a good project car. But i didn't have the extra money to invest in it yet, which might have prevented me enjoying it. Also have an 18 month old sleeping above my garage prevents evenings of tinkering in the garage so i couldn't dedicate the time to it either :( but i welcome it to all

I bought mine cheap and it's taken years to get where it is, I didn't have the money at the time and have done it as and when I have. I've just decided to have mine repainted as I have the money now and things will be changing hopefully later in the year when we get our first house so like you time and money has to go elsewhere in future. If you could put up with having it how it is for a few years it would be an excellent buy like you say but if your not quite happy it's not worth going for it until you fully are. If your happy with what you have now and it doesn't need the time or money spent on it then there is no point changing for something your not 100% happy with. Nice of you to share the car and hopefully someone will snap it up soon.

Buying an M and thinking that you can run it on a shoestring is madness - and I'm glad you realised it.

Fixing the gearbox shift pins for £3 is very optimistic. I wouldn't expect change from £200 after you have replaced the pins, the clutch, the giubo and the propshaft nuts. An inspection 2 service will cost another £200ish and needs some special tools.

It wouldn't have had a roof liner as these were introduced later than 1998.

Cosmetics wouldn't bother me, as you can tell from my motors:wtf:

If you got it for £9,500 and it's not a trade sale = bargain.

An M is a very risky trade sale.
