Hi,

I recently bought a 1998 1.9 z3. Cassette radio was disconnected, and its obvious that the previous owner tried to replace it with no success.
There was a broken CD changer at the back with all PCBs broken.
I am trying to install a new stereo, i bought the cable that converts the BMW cables in the console to standard ones but its not here yet.
The stereo in the console is not getting any power even if i connect everything. The thing is i dont know if it is working or if there is a connection to the battery even if the CD changer is gone.

My question is: Since the cables that normaly go to the CD changer arent connected to anything, do i need a new CD changer or amplifier in between?
Something to connect to the battery and then connect to the stereo or do the cables in the console cary electricity and signal to the speakers independently of the CD changer and i can just buy a modern stereo and thats it?

I have pictures of the wiring.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Mike

I see this is your first post, welcome to the forum.

First thing is for you to get a set of wiring diagrams for your car. You can then see where the power is coming from and the colour coding of the wires. Remember that the colour coding is in German.

Suggest that you update your profile information, so we know where in the world you are and the Z3 model you have.

At the top of your screen in a blue ribbon. In the "Resources" section, you will find the wiring diagrams. You will need the build date of your Z3 in mm/yy format. The first page of the wiring diagrams gives you the date range that they cover. It's in the bottom right corner. There are 6 sets of wiring diagrams that cover the production run for the Z3. They are on page 2 of the resources. These are USA based diagrams and also cover most of the UK versions. If you are in the UK, there are 2 sets of wiring diagrams on page 1 of Resources specifically for UK Z3's.

Do you have an amp in the boot, behind the right hand side carpet?

Update: I went with my multimeter and discovered that the wiring in the console gets power separately from the CD changer. I am getting 12V and all the wires are there so i may be fine. The stereo in the car is broken 100% so maybe thats the only problem.
New one coming this week i hope it works. I will post another update.
