Bad Points
  • Due to some thieving so and so stealing my coat (including keys) from the pub, I only have one key, and that is a Service key (£40 from BMW, a remote key from BMW was about £250 which didn't make much sense on a cheap car.
  • A service key doesn't open the boot or lock the glove box, therefore the 'key' for the boot is 'improvised.
  • The electrics in the passenger seat don't currently work.
  • There is some bubbling on the bolt on / off body panels, which, as we all know

    is a common Z3 issue.

Summary
It's been a reliable, nippy and fun little car for running around in the summer, I've certainly enjoyed owning it.
Priced realistically, as you can get really good ones for very little.
Probably worth more in bits but hopefully a good starter Zed for someone. I'd happily drive it to the south of France tomorrow!

I don’t think you put whereabouts you are?

If it helps you or a prospective owner I might be able to advise on getting a proper key cut and the transponder coded for a much more modest sum than the £200 plus from BMW.

I can get keys made up normally no problem. But working out how to uplift a service key to a main key might need some figuring out. Transponder coding certainly no issue.

Wouldn’t normally offer but a proper key might make the difference between keeping the car going with a new owner and meeting a sadder fate..

Did some checking and the difference between a valet key and master key is actually very minor from what I can see. Subject to confirmation with the locksmith I use:
  • A master key can be reverse engineered from the valet key and supplied and cut for about £20. That's the bit I need to check but from what I can tell it's simple enough. It can be done off a photo, the key doesn't need to be sent away and is actually a better way of having any key done than having it trace cut. In this instance the valet key can't be trace cut as it is missing cuts that are responsible for opening the boot
  • A PCB is then required for the new master key. Donor keys from ebay for £5-£10
  • The transponder can then either be moved from the valet key - not sure how as I've never examined one (I think I have one somewhere if I can find it) but it got in there so it must be able to come back out. Or I can create a new one if the EWS is removed and sent to me for a small charge to cover costs. £20 with return special delivery and supply of transponder.
Hope this helps you or a prospective owner :) It seems like a cheap car to me with all those bits for £750 and a proper key would be nice for it :)

Send me a PM if you want. No worries otherwise - I wanted to find this info out for myself anyway.

Thanks for that, good info.
When the coat / key was stolen I did a quick bit of research but couldn't find a non main dealer solution.
I had to get is sorted quite quick, as the car was stuck in a multi-storey car park ££, so the local dealer got one from Germany in a couple of days.

Good point regarding location, I'm in Bedfordshire.

Something else I missed the tyres are all pretty new Kumho's which went on about 3k ago.

If someone is on a low budget for a Z3 then this looks a bargain to me. All those new bits should mean there is a lot less renewal than most Z3s need.

This is so cheap hoops would actually add about 50% to the price of this

An eBay auction should be interesting for this car, you may get around the asking price after fees.

I know but I was after hoops for my car in beige if they were beige and not black I would have bought the car to strip

Can they not be coloured like any other interior bits?

Tony.

It had hoops and the net wind deflector thingy that I sold separately. Thus being able to offer it at such a bargain price!!

It’s time I pulled my finger out and reduce the fleet.
The mighty Z has a fresh MOT and I’ve just replaced the rad, thermostat and water pump.
Any takers before I risk eBay / Pistonheads / Autotrader?
