The Sport Edition Models featured bigger and sportier 17-inch split wheels, a slightly different front bumper with headlight sprinklers, slightly lower springs, brushed aluminium trim, a 3-color stitched M steering wheel, and an illuminated M gear lever.
All Sport Edition models came with sport seats, usually found with a bi-color interior or chameleon leather.
No M package existed before the 2000 model year, so the SE is considered a rare package.
In total 2.356 SE cars were built.

Not always split rims or headlight washers.

My 2.2 Sport has style 78 wheels (not split rims) and no headlight washers.

My 3.0 Sport has the same wheels as my 2.2 but does have headlight washers.

My April 1997 M44 has headlight washers, optioned from new. Most useless option ever invented IMO. :(

Very informative thanks for the info.
as for the rest of the extras? Does the pattern stand? (Seats, aluminium console, lowered suspension etc).
would really like to dig better into the SE phenomenon, lots of contradictory info around the interweb.
mine is also a 1.9 SE and although totally unjustifiable for 118hp to be sport, it seems it was a “high end trim” back in the day that was available for a limited time.

But why? Dont you find useful that every fifth time you switch on your wipers the nozzles make a total mess on the bonnet?

Top up or down, these days a lot of drivers would have a wet arm or leg by the time the headlights got a wash.

Yes, agree with that. The suspension is lower by 15mm from standard.
My 2.2 is an 'Individual' too so a few more options ticked from new.

My MOT tester normally gets caught out when the assistant in the car tests the wipers with the headlights on!
