Not looking for install instructions. I'm looking for make/model recommendations. Build/image quality etc.

Are these cheapo NoName things on amazon any use?

Thanks guys.

I have one on each car. Installed the first to get an insurance discount but decided to upgrade on all later.
My first one was a chinese something that overheated and stopped working above 30 celsius. Claimed to be 4k but never had decent quality and even worse was not a constant recording but made clips of 10minutes intervals.
Upgraded to Thinkware F70 Pro that has a G sensor and also Parking Mode (requires a cable - did not used it) and saving footage is just a click of a button. Its a 30fps one but no issues at all.

I haven't seen a dashcam yet where the record settings don't include adjustment of recording segment length, ie 1 min, 3 mins, 5 mins etc.

Tony.

I have a Nextbase 522GW on my 5 series which is excellent and comes with the backwards facing cam too that was dead easy to mount on the rear screen.

For the Z3 I concluded that there is nowhere suitable to fit a rear-facing cam (other than on the windscreen pointing at your face, which I didn't want), so opted for the Nextbase 222. It's perfectly adequate although not as good quality as the 522GW and fewer features, like embedding GPS, speed, vehicle info.

Before this sounds like a Nextbase ad, one thing I HATE about Nextbase cams is you have to reformat the memory card periodically, which I've never had with other brands of dashcam, and you don't get any warning other than that they just fail to boot up (and so you can't reformat them right then on the fly, you have to do it on a computer 😡). Typically this will be the journey when you have an accident!!

I was wondering about fitting the rear camera on the side of that piece of trim behind the passenger seat - the sticky up bit that the seat belt rolls out of. Or mounting it on top of the lid. Wouldn't that work?

I'd wouldn't have thought you'd be able to see out the back window with the roof up from the turret. And the lid wouldn't work for me because of the wind deflector.

If I was going to do it, I'd have found a way to mount it inside the roll hoop and then customised the wind deflector with a little window in the mesh.

(And even after finding a good view point for the camera, I reckon the picture quality through the plastic rear window would be shocking 🤣)

All nextbase cameras seem to have a 140 degree viewing angle. Many other brands have a 170 degree angle? Is that extra angle useful? I'd have thought that if you'r at a T junction then seeing out to both sides is useful? Or what?

Went with the Garmin Mini 2 and 57

The Mini 2 sits on the rear parcel shef and shoots through the window if the roof is up..

Image quality is excellent …

I deliberately went with only 140 degree of view so the image quality is useable like a go pro..

wired both into the central cigar lighter port via the Garmin usb plugs..

Not just Nextbase, most cams now have wide angle lenses. I bought a Nextbase from Halfords in Lincoln, took it for a refund after 2 days. Its was rubbish.

Thanks Tony. Was it just the 140 degree that put you off and/or something else? What kit did you settle for?

Those cameras with a rear facing "interior view" lens. Are they just for recording the interior cabin area - ie like a taxi driver might want - or do they also get a good image of traffic behind?

Anyone ever use a dash cam like this?

Looking at the actual lenses they're a different spec. I guess, one is supposed to be rear facing but they swivel. I can't see why both of them can't point forwards? Maybe slightly outwards to get decent footage out to the side?

Are the typical "interior facing" cameras capable of recording decent video of things at a distance? Or are they really just for close up of the car interior?

I'm wondering if I even need rear view camera anyway? Maybe just get a decent kit with front/rear cams and fit both in the front facing slightly to the sides. I'm not interested in recording my journey. But, when I'm joining at a T junction it'd be nice to have decent footage of trafic coming at me from the sides.

Are we talking dash cam for accidents etc or camera for recording drives etc?

Dashcam in my Z4 is an llWEY and its perfect. Hard wired into the fuse box. I didn't bother with the rear facing camera.
llWEY Dash Cam

Car Camera MUVI K2. Excellent device and a fraction of a Go-Pro cost.

Not interested in recording my journey. Just want it for evidence in case of accidents - crash for cash etc.

I use a nextbase HD Duo, recording quality front and rear is excellent, but I do use the 3M sticky pad and not the suction cup for stability. Personally, I would only use a branded dashcam. Your will get updates, spares and better support in the future.
Must have's for me are GPS, HD, Data stamp wifi/Bluetooth or both. Minimum 32Gb card.

I do like the look of the nextbase Duo but i was wondering if both lenses could point forward but at an angle partly sideways to get video of traffic coming from the side. Must confess I'm not too bothered about recording rear.
