Here in Glasgow we do not need such things... 
I remember a test was done some years ago and they found out the our water was so pure
you could top up a car battery with it strait from the tap. :-B

If you are in a very hard water part of the country then yes they are worth it,i have worked in the dental trade for 30 years and hard water can increase tartar build up on natural teeth as well as shortern the life of crowns and other prosthetic items,so for drinking water yes,and domestic items also suffer,your water company will tell you if your in a hard water area.pete
My parents used to have one and my father was fairly high up in a water company before he retired, engineer by trade originally so knows his stuff. I can ask which one they had if that helps?

They are good if you have the space
I always do the bubbles test with washing up liquid
in a glass before and after, its a amazing,
Especially good for the boilers, combine with a scalemaster,
plus a fernox TF1 magnetic filter

Down here in Basingstoke apparently we have the hardest water in the country (just like the residents...we're all well 'ard 
) and we've got a water softener that uses the block salt type. On the occasions that the salt runs out we really notice the difference, the water tastes metallic (ugh) and it's virtually impossible to get any soap foam when washing things. The softener was already installed when we moved in, but running costs are minimal (a few quid for new salt blocks now and then) and we wouldn't be without it :-bd

I think I've made up my mind and will get one, it's just a mater of which one now. I've read quite a bit so far on various forums and it appears a lot of companies want you to phone up for a price, they then want to send somebody round to do a survey and its the double glazing sales technique all over again, I polity told the last one to go %-( . Bring them on
