Howdy everyone, another query before trip to France .....has anyone used the tyre repair kits...thought of getting one for the trip.....have a space saver ....but these appear a better solution should the worst happen. Thank you.

No personal experience, but my brother, who drives between 200,000 - 250,000 (!) miles yearly for travel each and every year, would not be without a tire plug kit in his trunk. He has fixed so many tires on the sides of NY and Connecticut roads he has since lost count. Sometimes he'll follow up with a repair shop but more often than not the plug remains for the life of the tire.

I removed the spare from my Z3 and now just carry a cheap electric pump plus a can of tyre seal stuff. Every new car I've had recently just has these things as standard although on some a spacesaver spare is an optional extra. I'm wondering if one of these 'plug' kits is worth carrying as well, but I think if I had a puncture that I would only use either of these repairs to get me to the nearest tyre dealer. As I have breakdown cover I would probably call them out anyway especially if I was on a busy road.

Got my tyre compressor from Aldi in Spain when it was on offer at 7 euros (reduced from 10 euros), which was about £5 at the time !!! Rather less than £95.

Not seen this kit before and it looks interesting. But I've used tyre weld twice now with very good success. Once to fix what I suspect was a leaking/corroded rim that was slowly letting air out and it's still holding months later.

I carry one of these bought from Amazon, not recommended for long term but gets you out of trouble. Having said that, I will confess that the one time I have used it, I did about 10,000 more miles on the tyre with no problems.

I carry one of these kits and a tyre weld can in the boot(no spare wheel) used the plug once and it worked a treat, ran the tyre for a year but when I took it to a tyre shop to have the rears swoped over to get some wear out of the outsides the shop refused to refit it due to the repair.

What are you doing taking it to a tyre shop for a swap round, quick diy job. :)

Just a thought , if you did a 'plug it yourself' tyre repair and then it burst causing a crash or damage, would it invalidate insurance ?

I took my 2 rear tyres to be swapped over at Formula1 Autocentres last year and one to have a puncture repaired. Bloke said I would get no benefit from swapping the tyres between the two wheels (inside wear to outside) and that the puncture couldn't be repaired. Bought them home, plugged the repair myself with one of the cheap kits and got the tyres swapped over at another garage. Puncture repair has held up fine, the plug kits are great they have got me out of buying new tyres a couple of times. I won't be going back to Formula1 Autocentre ever again either, the bloke told me the inner tyre wear was due to the camber which is correct but he was adamant he could alter the rear camber for me despite telling him 5 or 6 times that it's not adjustable on the rear of the Z3. Apparently he had the correct machinery to do it though :banghead: I wish I took it back for the free check to waste his time and to watch him eat his words.

Never thought of using a plug kit on the car, as mine has the spare.
However, I used them on all my motorbikes and never had a problem, and all the repairs lasted the life of the tyres.
