Ban on petrol cars by 2040! How could I contemplate life without the roar of a sporty motor?
Enzo, Chapman, etc, etc, will be turning in their graves.

Yep just read this. It's going to be almost impossible to implement. As said tax on petrol and diesel between now and 2040 will rocket. They won't be able to do much with cars already on the road but rest assured they will do their best to price us out of new cars in the meantime.

Its not quite that - its a ban on selling NEW petrol/ diesel vehicles by 2040. Probably pie in the sky really - but if they say it they are hoping it will become reality at some point, mostly down the line though.

There would be a lot of things to consider to implement it, along with associated costs.

Tbh when I read things like these reports I'm not really looking forward to the future.
The best time to drive will be when driverless cars start to become popular, mucho fun will be had then on the roads :coolsteer) :D

Ok so they ban cars. Diesel cars do let's say 50mpg for arguments sake. How they going to ban lorries? Mine when loaded does a staggering 8mpg!. That's just my truck polluting the atmosphere at an alarming rate. What they going to replace the other 5 or so million trucks with on UK roads? Going to need some seriously big batteries to pull those about, oh and a bloody long charge!

Didn't see that thread @hard top , but I wasn't wanting to start a debate on the subject. It was just my minor little 'rant' on the continual attack on my beloved 'combustion engine'. I know all the benefits of cleaner air and infrastructure problems associated with changing the way we live, etc, etc.
My 'problem' is that I love cars, proper cars that sound and smell like cars should.

Things to think about...

Will the Oil barons drop the price of fuel and what will the MPG be in cars then... How many MPG ? Before all that... we have been sleep walking people.. Those smart motorways will be charging us for using them as road tolls, you did not think it was to ease the motorists journey did you.. Road tax will be abolished and recalled.. travel tax as it will be for the journeys you drive. So spinning number plates aka James Bond style will be very handy.

Those envoro-nazi tree-huggers have to brainwash a few more people that vote to make that happen. Unless you live in a place where you get your electricity from hydro plants or Nuclear you are doing more damage to the environment than combustion engines.

This was actually my first thought!
Who knows where technology will be by then but I can't see it wiping out the combustion engine any time soon.
Just think, 5pm comes, 10 million people drive home after work and plug in their cars (not everyone has a garage or off street parking either) the national grid will take more of a pounding than an army of strippers. Not to mention the ridiculous effects of building said cars in the first place and the infrastructure to run and charge them all on every street in the country

I remember back a few years when EV's were just coming on the market, and it was said all cars would eventually be electric. Some knowledgeable person commented that there isn't enough copper in the world to provide enough charging points if the current cars were all electric. Theres even more cars around now - how many more will there be by 2040 ?

Infrastructure needed is going to be immense, and standardisation throughout the industry - before you start on the resources for the cars themselves.

Last year fuel duty raised £27.6 bn - before vat, vehicle duty only raised £5.5bn. This spread over 37mill cars. The gove ( whichever is your flavour ) would still need to raise that revenue somehow - ideas anyone ?

Theres going to need to be some serious thought going into this, and tbh I don't really think any of our latest gov's have had the ability to do it.

All its doing is giving the car manufacturers something to focus on and to aim for - I suspect the date will be moved at some point when they realise the 'dream' isn't going to happen.
They'll be more things to worry about before then.

My sentiments exactly mate. The revenue is my main concern, it will have to come from somewhere ..........................
