Wow bit surprising after the big marketing last week on a truck and new roadsters. Time will only tell.

Lots and lots of problems with production and if you can't build you can't sell and the cashflow dries up.

I can't see them going under but they will be overtaken by all the mass manufacturers

Visited my dentist last week and he's brand new Tesla Model X was dominating the small car park. At first glance it looked impressive but on closer inspection I was a bit surprised at some apparent build quality issues, the most notable of which was that the front and rear doors didn't aligned properly. On something that costs close to £100K I don't think that's acceptable.

My mate has been saying they will go bust for ages as soon as the big manufacturers got on the bandwagon (didn't realise he was in tune ;)), worth more than Ford on paper but never made a profit.

Elon Musk has massively deep pockets from SpaceX. Tesla was never going to make billions initially once they decided to go mass market. Their problem was to not partner with a global player on the manufacturing.
I don't see Musk throwing his hands up and saying this is too hard though. Nothing, including money is a problem.

Have heard many reports of build quality, which on any car shouldn't be acceptable, but on a 100k one :wideyed:

He comes out with great ideas and pushes the envelope which is good, if he can sell his roadster idea before they are built - it should raise his funds :) Long term I can see someone like Mercedes buying out for the technology which probably wont be a bad thing.

~Saw details of the truck, didn't read all the article, but wondered how its going to differ from other EV, which currently aren't recommended for towing, due to possible drive train problems.
Roadster sounds serious fun tho :D - first one was pretty good, if before its time:)

You're right @Toby - big corporations especially those reliant on the oil industry rarely push the envelope. It's the crowd mentality. Tesla is making them all sit up and take notice.
Tesla though have found quality is something that takes a while to perfect. I think their products are sufficiently unique to soak up what are short term issues. They still have two or three years on the big players but I bet Mercedes, BMW and JLR are quaking in their boots.

Thing with the build quality is that the buyers of Tesla cars aren't doing it for that.

They are early adopters of brand new tech.

They are the sort of people happy to be involved in this and have the money.

100k on a porsche etc is a different matter and people expect the quality as standard.

A colleague at work has a model s and he cannot praise Tesla highly enough for their customer service and making him feel like he is part of the brand

As a lotus owner you probably know first hand the issues a small car maker faces on basic things.
The brand new Evora 400S thingy a mate had, had more leaks and issues than my 20yr old Z3 ever had. Was off the road for 6mths and lotus didn’t even do a courtesy car!
I think that was 80k and it only had a Toyota engine so no ground breaking tech at all!

But what a great car and nothing else from the mainstream comes close (if you don’t need to rely on it to go anywhere!). Never got a proper hoon in it because as soon it was running ok he got shot of it!

It's not just the new technology or small manufacturers though. I have spoken to 2 people in the last week who have unloaded Z4's because they cost too much to maintain. One went back to a Z3 and the other, my niece loved the car but after blowing 3k chasing an engine fault decided enough was enough and traded for a Merc SLK.

The Taiwanese electric car that could be FASTER than Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster (but will cost five times as much)
  • Will accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 1.8 seconds - a tenth of a second faster than a Tesla Roadster
  • Powered by 4 independent 350V motors, and has a max speed of over 270km/h

You would think for that price they could have afforded a stylist.
