@Lee is that not the same colour as the Zedshed car?

The murky world of BMW Individual ;)

The Velvet Blue the Zed Shed boys have is an Individual Edition I believe. In other words a set number of cars were produced to a fixed specification. The Fiji Green and Dakar Yellow are probably the best known examples. They tend to be accompanied by different seats - like piping in the colour of the car.

But Velvet Blue would also have been available as part of an Individual Build I believe. Nice options for extra money that get you an Individual sticker in the engine bay. Not sure what the list of items are that got you the sticker. Body paint and roof colour certainly. But not things like wheels and air con.

Both Velvet Blue types are shown here. Fantastic seats on the Individual Build.

If I ever get my head round the whole concept of Individual Edition v Individual Build and understand all the different specials and options I'll document it. There are existing web sites like above but they are not comprehensive and tend to be US edition focused.

Looks like a nice Zed.

This was on eBay a couple of weeks before being sold by a private seller. It sold for £2,463.

Now its up for sale by a dealer. It was up for sale earlier at about £4k and didn't sell so they have put it up for bids.

Not sure. But the Velvet Blue is normally associated with 2.0s rather than 2.8s.
As said above mate. It's slightly different to the shed zed. Techno Violet was a colour they used a lot with E39s, and E36's.

If it’s really Techno Violet the paint code is 299. Which is the easiest way to cut through any confusion with different names for the paint.

I can’t find any reference anywhere that suggests Z3s were made in that colour including individual programs.

It’s either wrong, has had a colour change or is as rare as you like.

Note rare doesn’t always mean valuable. But I think it does mean interesting :)

I’m going to message the seller.

Just ask him for the last 7 digits of it's Vin. You'll soon know for sure. I just did a background check on the car and even the colour is blank.

Personally I think it's velvet blue.

I have already ;)

Even if it is Velvet Blue that's pretty rare on a 2.8 isn't it?

The seller has kindly given me the VIN. And BMWVIN says Montreal Blue. The seller is certain it's Techno Violet though as he says he owned an E36 from new in this colour and is familiar with it.

Blue is a very funny colour in general to photo. I've seen Topaz Blue cars you'd swear were Estoril Blue. So far be it from me to say the seller is wrong on that basis. But even if BMWVIN doesn't say Techno Violet you might think it would at least say SONDERLACKIERUNG (490).

It also doesn't have S938 Individual Edition or S940 Special equipment BMW Individual in the build spec.

Nice bit of investigation. I'm in agreement It looks blue. If you look up techno violet blue its alot brighter. So I would go with it being blue.

You must remember that the BMWVIN info is only as good as the person that inputted the data in the first place.
It's does look a bit too purple to me to be Montreal but it does flip in certain light though so I could be wrong.

I've looked at hundreds of cars on BMWVIN and never found any issue :) This surely comes straight off the BMW build facility? Get that wrong and they'd build the wrong car wouldn't they!?

That said he is saying it says 299 on the paint sticker. I may go and look at it tomorrow as I'm in Bristol.

And he says he's used the same touch in paint on the Z3 as his Techno Violet E36 and it's a perfect match. Intriguing!
