Stiff Gear Selection

Bought a 2002 Z3 last November and after a lot of underbody rust stripping and sealing, did my first serious trip today to car show at Weston Park. Met up with another Z3 owner and compared cars. One think I don't like about mine is that the selection of reverse and first gear is stiff. Very stiff in fact for reverse.
On the way there I was in a traffic jam and nose to tail, first gear to neutral was a real pain. I'd heard that these gearboxes were a bit agricultural. In fact so much worse than an E30 or an E46 I'd owned which I thought were near perfect. The guy said his was similar. He let me feel the gear Selection on his car and in fact yes it wasn't light, but nowhere as bad as mine. I'm wondering if this can be remedied. Maybe some adjustment in the linkage if in fact there is a linkage or maybe a change of gearbox oil with a slick type additive.
I'm new to this site so hope I've put thus question in the correct section.
Another thing after reading articles here is 'Zed Shed' . What's that about. Sounds interesting.

If it's just first and reverse and the other gears are OK then it may be the clutch not fully releasing for some reason. Can you get the other gears (while stationary), if so, then it'll be in the linkage/selectors.

Thanks for your reply.
The other gears are OK. Not super smooth as some cars but work fine. Can get them while stationary without the engine running too.
Reverse is the worst. To pull out of my garage, it sometime needs that I select a forward gear and move slightly before I can then try reverse again.
I could live with that but stuck in traffic selecting 1st then neutral every few yards is horrible
I don't know what arrangement the linkages have but I think that needs looking at. Wonder if best access is from inside the car or underneath. Might as well put new G/B oil in too.

I would try changing the gear box oil before you do anything else. It is possible that it has never been changed in it's life. Another possibility is the "Detent" pins and springs, @Lee will confirm? The first and reverse gears are the most selected gears in any vehicle and consequently suffer the most wear. This is an operation which entails the removal of the gearbox, which depending on mileage and history would make it sensible to change the clutch so could become expensive.

Gearbox change on an E30 wasn't a big job. Is a Z3 harder to do. Maybe getting a spare isn't so easy. My cars only done 98k miles so would expect the g/b to be OK. Oil change first then.

I would try that. At 98k the selector detent pins and springs will be well used. Lee has posted quite a lot on here showing how to change these.
