I knew my Z3 had been involved in a minor accident before I bought it but didn’t realise the SRS issues it had.
I discovered the light bulb had been removed so after purchasing a B800 scanner I have been chasing fault codes. The seat belt pretensioners have been replaced, both impact sensors have been replace as they were both missing. Kept getting an 06 fault code so I was a bit lost at this point. Bought an C310+ and it pointed to the positive battery cable which I have bypassed with a 2 oms resistor. The fault now cleared and the SRS light went out and I thought that was it But no. When you turn the ignition off a back on it returns the fault code is then 04 airbag passenger stage 1. Reading posts about this fault it pointed to the clock ring but I found a post saying you can bypass the clock ring because the connection under the steering column was the same. I have plugged the drivers air bag in that way and the fault is still the same, 81 and 84 sensor for the side airbags.
Other than changing the airbags or the airbag module I don’t know what else it could be so I am hoping someone can help before I have to admit defeat and take it to a garage.

You wont be able to change the module.
They are code locked to the car once a new module coded in cant be changed only Bmw can do the original coding at around £1200 for new module and coding in.

I have looked into this a fair bit before and got nowhere.
As my zed only driver bag looked into fitting a module from a zed with 2 airbags then adding passengers airbag as wiring already there.
Thats when i found its was vin coded and at that point i could not find anyone anywhere who reckoned they could re code it so gave up.

Stephen.

I did read it was coded to the vehicle and I am hoping it’s not that because the code reader is picking up faults after the module if that’s how it works? I am getting pretty frustrated with it but I suppose that’s the joys of having an old project car.

Thanks for the offer Stephen, I might have to take you up on that. It’s just odd why I can clear the codes and the light goes out but when you turn the ignition off and on again the faults come back.

I'll speak to the Master tech at my work as he's a bit more of an electrical specialist than me see what he thinks.

That's always the case. The code gets cleared, but on switching on again, the fault is still there. Clearing the code does not get rid of the fault. Because the fault is still there, the light comes on again.

I couldn’t get it to go off before with all the other issues so I assumed it was something else causing the problem. Need to do some more fault finding.

I think I have managed to fix it by luck more than fault finding. I checked all the connections looked at the wire diagram to trace the wires and it turns out I have fitted the wrong crash sensors. I by chance bought what I thought was the wrong one on eBay and tried to cancel the order but the seller sent it anyway. Thought after going through everything again I might as well plug it in and see what happens and it has cleared the fault.
Thanks for everyone’s help and advice.
