Thought I'd share.

If any of you have ever had the misfortune to attempt to use a pair of screw down spring compressors you will know how terrifying and dangerous they are, nearly had my head taken of some years ago and refused to ever entertain using them again and would always advise other not to.

However I have found these on e-bay by US Pro Part Number 6255. They looked substanial and safe so I bought a set, just £20 :smug::smug:

So after an inspection of the build quality I used them on @PHILIP BAXTER BlueBird on Saturday and can report they are fantastic for the money, due to the multi hooks on the top they can't fly off, they compressed the springs perfectly with no slippage around the spring or any heart stopping moments, I highly recommend them if you are going to attempt new front shocks yourself..

They definitely look more sensible than the normal type.

I took the plunge and bought a floor standing device. It was £130. A good investment if you are going to be doing a few.

Agree Rob that's the way to go if its a regular job, I looked at one but unless I start doing a lot more its not worth the investment, for that one off for the home mechanic though these are just the thing, cheap, and more importantly safe.

This is what we use, very cost effective as I dragged it out of a cupboard in broken condition where I used to work. It had been sheared off by idiots using impact wrenches to compress springs. A new nut was welded on the end of the spindle and it was fine. I asked if I could have it but was told " Its not mine to give away, but you can take it on loan" Needless to say about 13 years later it's still on permanent loan. Comes with 2 sizes of cups and does the job admirably, but strangely, as soon as me and @Mint get it in the vice it gets very quiet in the Shed.;)
This is where the spindle was sheared off through abuse, using a 1/2" ratchet it's fine.

Good kit at the price.

I use 2 pairs of the normal screw compressors if I can get them on the spring., or 3 screws if I can't get 4 on. There's always a chance of one slipping if you just use a pair

Thats a good deal for £20.00, it would cost me that just to hire some for a weekend.

Edit....found them on ebay and there were only 3 left. .......So bought a set

They look good actually. I’ve only changed two springs and both times was not happy with how ‘sketchy’ it felt.

Might add these to my “not sure when I will need them but glad I do” toolkit.

I like the look of that, might get one as my front springs are the only part of the suspension which hasn't been changed yet.
