Hi Bill,

Hopefully dineshee28 or zedonist will stop by as they both seem to have plenty of experience in this area. if not it might be worth a PM as they have knowledge in this area that's way beyond mine :)

Cheers,
James

Hi Guys,

Standard Speaker set up non HK:

Front footwell = 5.25" component speaker
Door = 1' tweeter
Rear Behind Seat = 3" component Speaker (cannot fit larger than 3" in a pre face lift, will need to cut plastic, so might as well fit 5.25". you can fit 4" in a post face lift, but need a slim height 4", this will fit under standard grille.

HK system as above plus:

Door = 1" mid range
Subwoofer = 2 x 4" woofer (1 inverse mounted), only way to make sub work in this tiny volume area.
no doubt extra amps in as well

Note the real issue with upgrading speakers on either the non HK or the HK system is that the amplifiers used are underpowered and highly stressed so wont take big RMS speakers, but improvements can be made by swapping all the component parts out (speakers) and changing the HU. Alternately replace all component speakers, run new wires and fit bespoke Amps and a nice high powered slim sub.

Hope this helps

Hi zedonist, i have the 6" sub at the rear and want to know what the depth is, mainly asking as i havent got time for a few weeks to take it out and measure it and i want to get something ordered for when i do have the time. I have heard about the 6 1/2 inch kickers sub and grinding a 1/4 inch off either side to make it fit. Also what slim line amp would you recommend ? I have already upgraded the HU to an Alpine 7" lcd screen one and that improved the quality no end so know i want to go about changing the rest.
Thanks for the sizes on the other speakers at least i can start ordering them.

By the look of it my car has no tweeters in the doors, when you look in at them

there is nothing behind the grills

Have mine been taken out or did some cars not have them?

I have a 2000 1.9 by the way

Replace the footwell with 5.25 Components or you can easily put 6inch into footwell by putting in brackets. Then get a 4 channel amp fit it behind the dashboard. This way you will not use up sace anywhere and long cables etc etc. You can fit two 6 sub between the seats. Get a speacial sub enclosure fitted or fit a HERTS or JBL 8 inch SUB will give you around 400 watts rms base. Disconnect the spmall speakers behind the seats. No need as you have alot of volume tyo fill your car. Componentt speakers on the door is MUST. I recommend CDL high end speakers for crisp sound.

Hi Bill,

It might also be worth mentioning what sort of music you like to listen to as I know zedonist and dineshee28 have different setups which I think suit different styles of music and certainly listening preferences.

Cheers,
James

Yah jim! I did that ten years ago. In Wales in Brecon valley. Ended up getting £80. For Fine driving too fast. Lol!!!

The other things your quiet right about the type of music setup to listen to. You need to speak to car audio specialist and listen to the component speakers. They will improve sound quality but mention cdt component speakers and they will all tell you it's at the very top end of market. Base will only sound when their is base. Your 7 inch alpine will sort your music sound. Get advice audio shop specialist. Good luck!!

Hi Bill,

From what i understand the Kicker CVT65 is a shallow mount sub and will fit the original HK box with a little bit of fettling, a number of people have done this mod if you search the web, majority recommend not using the original sub amp, which as you are changing all other speakers, makes sense to run new cables.

What model is your Alpine unit, if it is compatible it is worth fitting the KPT-445 in line amp to your component speakers and then a separate amp to the sub from the RCA outputs, if your Alpine unit is new it may have the ability to tune the LPF and HPF like on mine.

This is the sub fitted to mine - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pyle-PLBASS8-8- ... B001RJMZRE

You can get it for under £100 if you search the web, it is branded elsewhere as Lanzar, but it is the exact same item, you can alter the gain and LPF on this and you also have a remote volume.

I would however if you can modify the HK unit as it is a sealed and tuned enclosure for the Z3.

I originally thought mine had no tweeters, but you will find they are there behind some black material, which is why you can not see them, they are worth replacing with some decent metal tweeters:

Note you will need to remove the door card as the grille assembly is held in with one screw.

Can you post a picture of your door mounted component speakers please, did this involve cutting metal from the door?

You dont need any cutting if you are replacing 5.25s. You will need brackets to put 6 1/2's

If you get high end 5.25s ten you wont need any cutting etc etc. You can fit on the door a custom build 61/2 enclsoure onto the door.

Ring some audio enclosure specialists for this.

Great thanks, can you post a picture of how you have approached it, I have seen the door Pods that hold 3 x 5.25. Very interested to see how yours is positioned and placed with 1 x 5.25?
