Hi,
Z3 1.9L 1999 Roadster M43 engine
Just replaced my radiator for a Nissen type and filled the system with new antifreeze / DI water @ 50%.
Bled the system as per my previous thread "Expansion tank leak".
Everything seems OK e.g. heater works when hot selected, no leaks, and level in the expansion tank returns to KALT when cold (i.e. after being left o/night). Filled the system with 6.4 lts and the difference from spec of 6.5 lts being explained by "hold up in the system".
Upon driving, the gauge needle increases ( as one expects) and seems to settle at an area about 1/2 way between the 2nd white mark on the gauge and the thermometer icon on the gauge.
However, I did notice that the needle does move, not eratically but smoothly, dependent on driving style e.g. @70 on a dual carriageway and say 50 on a A road betwen the two aforementioned marks i.e. the white 2nd mark and the thermometer icon. 10miles @70 the needle was rock solid on the 2nd white mark.
If I park up and let the hot engine run (e.g. in a traffic queue) , the needle moves slightly beyond the thermometer and the fan kicks in. When I drive off, the needle slowly drops to between the 2nd white mark and the thermometer icon after ca 3 miles.
As I am new to BMW and Z3 in particular, I am querying whether this is normal - I suspect it isn't but it could just be a more sensitive temp gauge/sender than I am used to.
Should I try another bleed by raising the front of the car, turning the engine on and opening the bleed screw?
As I have put my expansion cap from my previous radiator on the new Nissen one could this be an issue?
Is there a simple check to see if the system is pressurising without buying any tools?
There are no leaks of coolant that I can see. No coolant is seen to be escaping from the expansion tank cap.
As always any advise will be much appreciated.
Kind REgards
Brian
