Does anyone still use this stuff? I last used it about 15yrs ago in my old motor bike and it seemed like it made the engine run smoother and quieter. I say "seemed" as may be it's like the placebo affect?

I'm thinking of putting a can in my car after the recent rebuild as I'm thinking anything that aids engine lube can only be a good thing.

I see now that Slick 50 is available for engines that specifically run on synthetic oils.

What's the general consensus?

I'm personally in the "don't waste your money" camp on additives. Not quite the same thing, but I used Cataclean to try and improve emissions to get the car through the MOT recently, and it actually made the reading worse. I would have thought that good quality oil and fuel removes any benefit from additives like Slick 50 (if indeed there ever was a benefit). Have no science to this, just my opinion. A marketing article will likely express its virtues, so who can tell. I might be coming rather sceptical though.:)

I've always wondered if this stuff ever made a difference so I'm following the thread with interest.

I don't know anyone who has actually used it, so it can't be that popular surely?

I think that I read somewhere that BMW actually firmly advises against the use of oil additives in their engines.

I have used slick 50 in the past. On my track day mx5 the oil would always drain from the tappets from lack of use and rattle on start up until the oil pressured them up. After an oil change and slick 50 this solved the problem I could leave the car for months and it was quiet on start up.

Slick 50... didn't know it was still around, but it brings back memories. In the mid- to late-80s everyone I knew started adding it to their crankcases based mostly on anecdotal evidence that it worked, spread person to person. It was rumored to be the 'secret stuff' that would make your motor last forever :D

I added it to my oil changes on my E21 and Alfa Sprint, even though it was hard to get and expensive. I guess I stopped using in the early 90's when I went full synthetic on all my cars.

I don't think it's in their interests if their engines last for ever. Probably the same with the oil companies not making oil with the same stuff (PTFE) in motor oil.

I'm going to put some into my black zed that's just undergone a head gasket replacement. The car is running ok and there aren't any fault codes stored but I don't think it's running quite as smoothly as it was before I did the work.
