400 litres of water is around 400kg of weight, and it takes long enough at the petrol station putting 40 litres of fuel in

I was more interested in the U.S. Navy water engine, now they recon this could replace oil and gas in the coming years. But I have a question around its green credentials, as I am sure we do not have a limitless supply of water on planet earth, would this use of this very life dependant resource not only accelerate global warming but also see to the end of the Human race? I wonder how many years it would take for the worlds oceans to be emptied?

Big problem energy in is approx 140% of energy out.

Similar to the hydrogen cell where energy required to break the hydrogen hydrogen/oxygen molecular bond is massive compared to the energy given out when hydrogen is burnt in oxygen.

We must keep trying though.
Like pure electric cars Zero emissions where they are being driven but power stations still have to run to recharge the batteries, don't make me go on.

Agree @Brian4 energy is energy and those 0 emissions cars only transfers the 'pollution' to another area - the power station. We have one here at the university and it is promoted as sustainability, but we all know the truth. I have seen cars that run off of water by converting the h2o to h2 and o2. The gas produced is slow but enough to power the car. A good friend of mine developed a car engine using rare earth magnets and a single car battery. He drove all over the Philippines in it for several years - a university that is involved in the solar car challenges stole his camshaft/sensor and electronics technology.

276,062,622 years of sea water power at today's usage of oil, is it worth a punt, at what point does the Eco system change, will it affect availability of drinking water. For me solar has to be the answer, but it needs to be totally clean, with no harmful manufacturing emissions, which includes batteries. What is clear is that at some point if the direction on energy is not radically changed, then the earth will run out of resources, and can we be selfish to say its not a problem for another 100,000,000 years?

There is no need to worry about running out of resources, let me explain. There is vast quantities of natural oil and resources around to last a very long time. By the time it starts to dry up all of a sudden new energy resources will be available [I believe the technologies exist but are deliberately kept undeveloped/not rolled out due to economic reasons. We also have uranium in abundance and when people get cold and hungry they will allow nuclear energy even if they don't like it.

Furthermore [and this is a personal interest to me] genetically speaking the human race will not be around any more than about 100 or so more generations due to the mutation rate [about 60 per generation]. No, mutations do not 'give us wings' and make us better and stronger, they make us weaker, poor immune systems, disabilities, and such. Thought I would throw that in for free!

I don't think there will be any technological advancement to harness this, the world has seen no new inventions in nearly 100 years, all we do nowadays is focus on upgrades to existing technology, imagine if someone was to take the car concept back to grass roots level, it would look a lot different to today's most advanced model on the road the I8. Like everything, greed and money takes over, no one is in it for the long haul, only the fast buck......mobile phones is the pinnacle of this......

Mind you we worry about energy, but if the world population keeps growing at the expected rate, we won't have to worry about energy, as it will be food that becomes the problem, the Chinese have already experienced this......

The only time that we will run out of water is when the sun starts to expand in around 3 billion years and turns the water to steam, burns off the atmosphere allowing the water to escape. water does not run out, it just get recycled..Climates change and water is distrubuted in other parts of the world, thats why we have dried up lakes not that the water is running out (this is a natural occurence and has been going on for billions of years), 70% of earths Fresh Water is in the icecaps.so the problem is goint to be too much water as the icecaps melt due to use of fossil fuels, this is what is causing the problems, Sea Water has been a possible source of power for years, we are just waiting for the technology to use it (if its not available already?).

Tom is not my favourite actor, more so after they give him the lead in the Jack Reacher film. If you have read any or all the books, I have, he is definitely not Jack Reacher. He may well make a very good Martian. Over to you Moz.
