Looking for a cheap sat nav to plug in the Z4. Obviously I've used the fitted sat navs in various cars I've had (some much easier to use than others) ,but I don't know much about the various Tom Tom s and Garmins etc.
All I want is a simple sat nav, easy to use. Seen Tom Tom One / Start and Garmin Nuvii, any advice would be welcome. Just bare in mind that I'm an idiot, so not too technical.:D

Only ever used Tom Tom and recommend it. Far better than any installed manufacturers system (except Mazda they use Tom Tom or did in my 6)

Thanks @Althulas,very kind, but I won't be buying a new one. I'll just get a cheap one off ebay or similar and live with it. Just thought I'd see if most have a preference for a particular brand.

Both tom-tom & garmin are great. I find the tom-tom a bit . . . bulky ? I've always been a garmin fan (use in my Zed), I find the flat pouch convenient, and it makes the built in sat-navs look sick. Just look for the better screens in later models, some of the earlier model screens werent great.

For work, I'm using waze on the phone, which I prefer slightly to googlemaps. The only thing against them is loosing the map screen when a call comes in. But they're all good . . .

I have an old Tom Tom Start, but the memory is too small, And it doesn’t take memory cards so you can’t update them.

Some older Tom toms are no longer supported and will not be able to be updated.

hope this helps Victor1, don’t want you buying something that’s gonna get you lost or won’t even work.
My coupe has BMW updated sat nav but I find it too long winded because it doesn’t recognise post codes.

Roy.

Glad I bought new one too Niall.
Tom Tom Go 6200, my third tomtom, a bit of a handful for me but getting used to it. No more connecting to computer for updates, does it on WiFi, can leave it in car and pre-plan my route on mobile using My Drive get into car and transfer it in seconds. Much more useful than the outdated BMW sat nav in the car which doesn’t even recognise post codes. Bought latest updated disc for it and still doesn’t impress me. Complete waste of dashboard space. Have adapted a Tom Tom mount to go into disc player as I don’t use discs.

You've obviously not seen me using my phone @as400.=)) Old people and smartphones don't mix. Actually my daughter says it's not a smartphone, says it's a Haemorrhoid or something.:D

Ken, I too have a TomTom, my second in fact. The only trouble with asking about an old/second hand unit is it may be too old to support the new maps and will be out of date, but it depends on what you want to do with it. I find the TomTom very easy to use, I like to set up a route on my PC then send it to the sat nav. But if you just want to put in a postcode/name of a place that works just as well. You just have to decide when you initially set it up whether you want to go the fastest or shortest or most fuel efficient way and whether you want to avoid certain roads like motorways.
If you do get a TomTom I'd be happy to help you out using it.;)

Thanks Dave, I'm possibly getting a Tomtom XL2 IQ tonight if it looks ok.I really only ever use them for finding an address in a built up area or getting past/through towns on journeys. Not bothered about all the other stuff. Seems most recommend Tomtom so I'll try that. I had a Navman years ago and that was ok, but since then I've had the fitted units. Best ones I had were in Audis and Kias. BMW were more trouble!
