Hi all,

I’ve just changed the rear discs on my 2001 1.9 Z3. Before I took the old ones off I noticed they felt like they were rubbing slightly on something for about 1/4 of a 360 degree turn when turned by hand.

As the handbrake shoes were pretty worn, I’ve changed them today too along with new springs and pins.

The slight rubbing is still there though even with the shoe adjuster wound all the way in. It’s not brake pads as I’ve not refitted the caliper yet. Everything behind the disc has had a good clean up with a wire brush and brake cleaner too.

Any ideas what I should check next??

Maybe you have caught the back plate and just need to bend it back a very little to free it.

It's possible the handbrake cable(s) are not tensioned enough and it could be that the cable catching on the rear of the hub. Try pulling some slack out of the cable( a couple of clicks) by applying the handbrake, and then see if the noise is still there.

Tony.

Looks like that was it! Thank you!

EDIT - Nope, spoke to soon. Definitely something to do with the brakes. Removed the shoes and replaced the disc and it spins with no rubbing. Back to the drawing board…

Show us some pictures of the back plate please. Fit the disc with the shoes off and try it then.

Tony - I’ve sorted it thank you. I mounted the disc, gave it a tap around the drum with a rubber mallet, pulled the handbrake on and off a few times and the rubbing is gone.

I guess the shoes just needed to align themselves.

Thanks for your help though!
