It seems to me that since there are so many Vacuum leaks that occur in M54 engines, someone has a kit that contains some or all of the rubber and plastic tubes including the large ones in the rear of the intake. My car will not start anymore ever since I found the cracked tube just aft of the MAF. I fixed the hole but that did not fix the problem. Must be another. Vacuum experience anyone? Car is a 2004 but only has 22000.

Very unusual for a Vacc. leak to cause a car to not start. I suspect other issues maybe? Is it possible that you dislodged an electrical connection while changing the intake boot? Do you have a "code reader" to look for any clues in the OBD?

yes, as soon as the temperature drops below 97 in the garage I plan to use my Blue Driver to search for codes. I agreed with your statement until I got the car finally started and it just sits there idling between 1500 and about 3000 in a rhythmic cycle. I was told just top yank all stuff between the air filter and the throttle valve and to clean the throttle valve also.

Does it run any better with the MAF wiring disconnected?

Vaccum leaks from holes or splits in any of the rubber hoses and intake bellows are the cause of many running issues, these engines require a toatal sealed vaccum to operate correctly. A smoke test will reveal any issues that you can't find visually. Repairing splits and holes is preety useless, always replace items to assure a good vaccum. In my experience Maf's either work or work poorly or not at all, they don't always set codes when duff. Cleaning with Maf spray is not always successful, it killed mine completly when I had issues. When you put a code reader on have a look at the fuel trims in live data, high trims indicate over fueling as air leaks are being picked up by the exhaust sensors that don't match what has been passed through the Maf so it thinks its running lean and it puts more fuel in at the injectors to richen the mixture up.
