This was a very ambitious build, so much work in such a short time with so many things that could go wrong. The plan is for Grumps to drive 180 odd miles down south, refresh his subframe and suspension and drive home the same day. With so many things that could go wrong we decided to split it over two days just in case anything did go wrong.

Like with every Saturday morning we start with breakfast, by this time me and grumps already had Reggie in the air with the wheels off and collected all the parts needed for the day.

So we had to make a plan with so many things to do. Me @Rally @Mnbrennan attacked the rear while @Oldguysrule @pgunter tackled the front.

Once under the car we soon discovered our job would be a lot easier, Reggie already had the spare wheel removed quite often we end up cutting these off. Also in the past @Grumps had already fitted a Powerflex bush so there's another half hour saved. Reggie also had a custom exhaust system which split into three sections making life easier dropping the subframe in one go. One hour and 15mins later the subframe was on the floor!

At this point we took stock of what we found so far. One was the exhaust bracket had taken a beating and the rear brake pads were finished. We also realised my blow torch died so we made a trip out to get some parts. We also saved a few pennies taking the handbrake cables back, the cables we removed were in good health.

Old bush heated up and pressed out. Old ones were totally shot.

While out Martin removed the old shocks finding they were totally shot, even the top mounts had given up causing the rattling grumps could hear.

We also had a guest halfway through the day. He owns one of the cleanest Z4M's I've ever seen, he even had time to play with his drone.

Did I mention it was about zero degrees all day, so so cold. So we needed a few more tea breaks than normal.

So within a few hours of dropping the subframe it was all torqued up and back in. We then had to do the test drive and seafoam the engine along with a service.

So back from test drive and its all smiles for Grumps.

Now grumps has no excuse this summer not to enjoy his zed :D

So in all a job well done by everyone. We managed to get so much work done in such a short time. Well impressed
:D

Looks like an amazing job

Great to see so many members coming together with skills to do this work.

Got me thinking about suspension and bushes on my 2.8. Think I’ll look into this at the end of summer.

Well done lads

Very impressive job lads, you put garages to shame with your high quality and swift work. Nothing 'amature mechanic' about this.
:scorecard:

What does this seafoam stuff do please?

Oh, nice Z4, great colour and most impressive shine.

You spray seafoam into the air intake whilst running the engine. It breaks down carbon deposits and cleans the cat out mate.

If you ever want to practice replacing all the bushes on a z3, I would be happy for you to work on mine....

I’d even provide biscuits with the tea !!! =))

Great work again chaps I'm ready to get mine done now garage cleaned out and room made.
Everything has been soaked and pre undone so I know what to expect from most of the fixings.
Looking forward to getting it all sorted out and fixed but hats off to you guys for some superb work and the write ups always help to give insight to jobs to be done.

How you going to handle the axle on your own mate? If timings are good I can come and give you a hand.

I have an offer from Paul Rice too Dave ,I have the last week of March off but I think I will have it dropped before then. Dropping it out I think is no issues getting back in may require a hand but I have multiple jacks and a jacking beam so once it's balanced to lift it will drop back in nicely I think.
Appreciate the offer and may just take you up on it all hands to the pump and that :thumbsup:

If I get low on man power I just remove a swing arm and drive shaft from each side then drop the beam and diff together. It's well over 100kg as a whole assembly, so taking it down in sections makes it easier.

i did mine on my own, not that hard really. biggest pain was getting it back in and aligning it with the prop. make sure you have a good strong jack
