Rear speakers..

I know this is been asked so many times but what have people upgraded there rear speakers with?

Has anyone managed to get bigger speakers in there to improve bass tone ?

I did have a sub in the 2.8 but dont want it in the M and would rather get a decent speaker set up...

Im currently running an Alpine head unit with standard speakers

I think the main issue is the mounting depth so if you wanted to go for a bigger speaker you'll end up having to cut the plastic behind the seat and mount the speakers on a spacer ring otherwise I think your limited to speakers roughly the same size as O.E, however just replacing these should see a difference in sound quality. On my system I'm running an alpine headunit followed by a vibe amp which is coupled upto two sets of vibe 5.25 components, in the footwell and behind the seats with tweeters in the door cards.
Running the speakers from an amp makes a huge difference in loudness and quality well worth it imho.

Once installed I find this song best to set up the bass lol :-bd

Do they have to be shallow fit? Or do I need spacers

Thanks Daz, I'm looking at ordering a set of speakers from eBay and didn't want to get a set if there to deep.. Shall have to see what's behind there..

Regards the badge thread I agree it is a little OTT but just trying to say its good to add a bit of fun a laughter to these sites as sometimes they can get a little to serious and mundane..
As long as your not offending anyone I think it's ok

5.25" will fit, you will need to cut the plastic and you will need spacer rings, if you can buy shallow basket speakers, but i do recommend that you get some around 75 - 100 RMS to make a difference, you will need an amp, but with the Alpine uit you can buy an inline amp that requires no extra wiring as it plugs into your loom (KPT-445 - amp) I have this fitted and it is good.

I am currently drawing up some custome spacers so that i can minimise the space used, as currently to get a fit i have used to 10mm thick spacers. I think it should be about 12 - 15 mm, I will have these machined out of aluminium and polished, let me know if interested might be cheaper to buy more than two.

I have 4" Vibe Slick speaker behind the seats, pretty good sound for the price. This is off my journal:

Up next were the rear speakers, which were a little harder to fit. As there is no room behind the original speakers it is impossible to get a decent set of 4" speakers in. Because the mounting depth needed to be larger with my new speakers I had to mount them on the outside of the trim. I used a dremel to cut away at the original trim so the speakers would fit flush and screwed them straight through this into the screw holders already in place.

Too get speakers with more depth in you can mount them on top off the trim giving you a little extra room without the use of a spacer. You may need to cut away the trim but then the speaker can be mounted on top and screwed through the trim plus you can use the original wiring.

I fitted 5.25s in mine & made some spacers out of old speaker grills to get them to fit but they taper in where they fit to the trim so it makes them look a bit "stuck on" so I might buy some proper spacers in the future but for now I think they look ok

Thanks guys, I've just had a quick look behind my seat and the rear speakers are different in the M
There about 2.1/2 inches wide and the panel doesn't come off.. How the hell do these come out?? :-?

You'll need to remove the roll hoops and the surrounding trim to gain access through the top.
