Recently got E89 2010 which has a fairly basic radio, which is fine, but it also has a “phone” button (to the right of the clock and sound symbol buttons) but that button doesn’t seem to do anything! I’m not sure whether I need to connect my mobile using the phono socket (in the centre console) or if there’s Bluetooth somehow! I’ve read the audio and owner’s manual that came with the car, but they don’t seem to be much help. I’m now wondering whether there was a factory option that wasn’t fitted from new. Not a major issue, just curious 🤨

Hi probably it doesnt have this option. Bmw usually throws a steering wheel that has more functions than the actual ones, but you can always retrofit.
to see if your car has it, fill your vin here and check the options https://www.mdecoder.com/
If you see a telephone somewhere in these lines then tell us which option is it and we will find the way to connect your mobile to the car.

If there's isn't bluetooth connectivity you won't be able to connect your phone. The phono socket in the centre console is just for auxilliary connection, ie playing music stored on your phone or other mp3 device, through the cars speakers. Did you get a Telephone handbook with the car which has a picture of an old English style phone box on the front cover?

Hi. No, just an audio handbook that seems to cover the radio and cd which made me wonder if, whilst there’s a button, it’s not used. Thanks.

This is the "Telephone" instruction book which came with my 2011 E89.

If you press the "MENU" button on the radio,

and then the display will show this.

If it doesn't display the telephone symbol then it doesn't have telephone connectivity.

I think you get phone and BMW together, you can call them in an emergency.
