Now we have a resident Expert I'm hoping to get the definitive answer to this question. :D but happy for any input to my question.......

I can't get my head around using quick detailer and a cloth on a dirty car, how does it not cause scratches in the bodywork?

snoops,

i only washed my car a few times last year.

the rest of the time (in between washes) i used the detailer.

it is a water based product, so in theory shouldnt damage the paintwork.

my car is silver, this seems to mask any imperfections to the paintwork.

the detailer is there for removal of light dust or dirt, not heavy soiling i believe.

i use it on arrival to meets, while on meets and after meets (buckets and cloths in the boot).

Matt, as your the expert can you add a lot more here please?

QD's provide a layer of lubrication between the dirt and the surface, wiping if off with a cloth is no different to wiping with a wet sponge. I wouldnt use it as a replacement for washing but for for light dust, water spots its brilliant. Also works well on engine bays and interiour trim.

LOL I think you will all give Matt palputations. I'm guessing he can't type until he has chance to chill out over quick detailers ;)

I use quick detailers at shows but I know I am risking / probably damaging the paintwork but my car would need to be corrected / resprayed for it to worry me as it has plenty of swirl marks already.

If you've paid good money to have your paintwork corrected then you would be stupid to use a quick detailing on anything but a clean car.

The science is pretty simple in that anything that physically touches your car is liable to cause a swirl / scratch under the wrong conditions so the trick is to clean it as much as possible without physically touching it (hence the reason for loosening dirt via snow foam and other products an rinsing before ever touching the paint).

So given this the real question is how much damage the quick detailer will do and how bothered you are. That is partly dependant on your personality, how dirty your car is and what condition the car was in to start with ;-)

ps don't mention sponges either #-o

I've been to Matts workshop and he actually uses an old pair of y fronts and a bucket of gravel to wipe the cars down first.. :ar!

Sorry guys Ive only just seen this thread - wasnt ignoring you all.

I use a QD very often and they certainly have their place and also their limitations.

Mainly I use them in between wax top up's and use them only following a wash (car that is ;) ) I use them a way to go over the car following it being dried to pick up any missed water spotting and add some more protection. I find them useful for this stage only.

When finishing a detail and having used a high end natural carnauba wax, I use a carnauba based QD such as field glaze to remove any wax sweat ( oils used in the wax that surface after buffing off the wax) and once again as a final inspection.

As already said, they are not to give the car a dry wash in between washes as it car mark your paint due to any dust or grit that can easily be airborne and land on your cars paintwork

HTH guys

Thanks for your reply Matt, you have confirmed my thoughts and the logic I was applying. The only time I have used a quick detailer is the Meguirs clay kit and only on a car that just just been washed and dried, is this the same product that people are buying in bulk?

Sorry if it feels like a "busmans holiday" for you when you come on here :D

Back in the early days, like 2007 QD was a product that was also recommended for use during claying as a lube aid (now now Liam ;) ) and the megs clay kit came with some. Since then a QD has evolved into more of a prduct designed to add more depth and increase protection.

The megs 'last touch' QD detailer one can buy in bulk and is a decent enough QD but imho is past its best. I find the megs 'Ultimate QD' to be mighty impressive and works well with a synthetic wax.

As a clay lube I use a mixture of water and a drop of ph neutral shampoo - cost effective and works just as well :)
