As part of the cold idle investigation I have noticed a ticking sound in or around the Vanos.

The Vanos had a rebuild over a year ago.

if not the Vanos itself what could be clicking regularly every few seconds?

Thanks

Could it be a vanos solonoid clicking? You say it has a rough idle. Is something trying to adjust valve timing to idle correctly. Wrong signals ot bad solonoid or something?

What was the outcome with Iridium Rich ?

Did they have the car cold to look at ?

If you can hear a rattle around the vanos as said above it might very well be one of the solenoids getting sticky.

I could feel the solenoid (top one) clicking today @Lee ..it’s very audible. Looks easy to get it off but is it at all serviceable/cleanable or is a new one needed ?

Best to replace, they fail internally.

Not sure on their cost. Ones easy to reach with a 32mm spanner the other needs a crows foot attachment.

Iridium said it only idled slightly rough that they thought would settle. Unfortunately it actually idles like this.

When I look at OEM the solenoid itself is a sealed unit with the piston two separate parts. Is it the sealed unit piece only that needs replacing?

Well I have a new fuel filter, crankcase sensor and PVC which the car needed but it didn’t resolve the rough idle.

Mine was rebuilt a few years ago and developed a ticking. It was the camshaft sensor failing. Replaced that (£22) and the noise went. This was last month and been fine since

The exhaust side solenoid is blisteringly hot after the car has been driven. Switched out the inlet side cam sensor but not the exhaust side.

I replaced both as the exhaust was only another £17 and thought whilst I was there might as well.

It's due back in to Iridium in a couple of weeks. Ant and i changed out the other cam sensor last night as well as replacing the top solenoid which was getting very hot (solenoid or engine oil?). Still has the clicking from the Vanos(?) until warm and the very rough idle. I think the problem is also any garage that looks at the car, fires it up and watches it for 60 seconds where they just see the slightly jerky reduction in revs after that they obviously don't see the wildly swinging revs because they switch the engine off. Ant wondered if taing the boots off and spraying the throttle body might help. Can carb cleaner be used or not?
Because I don't anything about the way the alarm works I have found recently that if I blip the car shut with the roof down I return to find the indicators going. Doesn't do that with roof up.
Thanks

No issues with carb cleaner, might be worth taking it off and giving it a clean, just nuts n bolts.

It's strange as my dads 2.8Tu thats been parked up for a year is now doing this same thing, hunting and cutting out cold at idle, Once I drive it and get it all warm its fine.

P.S I would start doing things like removing the injectors from the car and laying them all in bottles to check ones not leaky.

Like this.
