well iv just took the clear coat off on the drivers side using a polisher and compound :((
iv picked up 2 scratches the other day while out and about....both were about 4 inches long......so i set about them trying to get them out....just as i was about to be satisfied with the results i cut through the clear coat....ffs X(
any of you chaps know if this is going to need a full respray on the door or can they patch up the clear coat?

Bad luck:cry:

If its 'just' through the clearcoat in a small area you should get away with a blow over with clear. A respray of the panel is better but you may not get perfect colour match to surrounding panels.

Oh dear swamps that is bad you may get away with just clearcoat just depends how far you've gone through wether you've disturbed the bascoat too much. Pretty much as deano says you'll not get a perfect match without blowing in surrounding panels which is a pain so worth just trying a clearcoat IMO

The problem is the surrounding clearcoat is probably very shallow now as well so you risk more burn when you polish in the future.

I would get the panel re laquered but they may have to blow into other panels or you may get away with it as its not a colour match you after as they are only clear coating and it may well cut back and blend in within the panel.

I have a paint gauge which comes in really handy to check paint thickness before polishing as its so easy to burn the paintwork with a machine polisher. I've seen it done by hand as well with over enthusiastic scratch removal.

If the scratch is deep you are better off not trying to cut it out but just take off the edges (the edges of the scratch are what makes it stand out) and this can make it much less noticeable depending on light.

yep John i agree with taking the edges off.......i did one earlier that has all but gone unless you catch it in a certain light..............the clear coat has gone on the curve of the door...i did keep it wet and as cool as i could....but like you say it may have been thinner their..im going to try and get it sorted tomorrow....the guy i use has done me proud in the past so fingers crossed

Sorry to hear about this — easily done with a rotary. People don't realise how easily unfortunately :(

If you want it to look perfect then forget having just clear applied as you will still see it. It needs repainting properly and depending where abouts it is it will need to be blended through adjacent panels. There are 9 shades of estoril blue! Never accept an edge to edge job in this colour or it will look wrong :)

well shes in.....had a good chat to the sprayer about what iv done....he took a look and commented that its very easy to do especially when you think your getting close to removing to scratch............as for the colour match.. he said as Mat did that there are lots of different shades.....and could match them...with the bonus that the burn is in the middle of the door so could blend it out from there...he seems very confident and has done loads of work for me in the past and its always been spot on..and he loves the M ....so fingers crossed..

anyway its Mozza's fault for borrowing me the polisher in the first place.... :))

Good stuff, thats what I meant when I said depending where on the door it is. If its bang centre then that's certainly possible to fade out each end.

Might it be a good time to get him to look at the sills? Favourite for corrosion to the ends
