Probably wrong air bag as well as the facelift cars are dual stage.

Yeah thats why it was the wrong clockspring, wrong connectors. So had to get a new steering wheel and clockspring to fit a prefacelift. The joys of buying a car that had an aftermarket steering wheel on it. I should've checked first

I might be wrong but the steering wheel itself is the same for pre and facelift cars.

The airbag is different and if it’s a single stage airbag, harder to find.

Clock-springs can be bought new…

Nope, the connectors on the clockspring are different for pre and post facelift. Not an ideal mistake to make

The wheel itself isn't different. Just get a different clock spring as mentioned this can be swapped and bought to suit.

Seems a shame to sell it over a clock spring.

You can't because the clockspring doesn't fit the airbag connections. It's definitely different

The steering wheel is the same. Prefacelift or facelift. 100%

The clock spring unbolts from the steering wheel.

Literally just dropped off a facelift m sport wheel with an e39 5 series clockspring with a single stage air bag to fit in my prefacelift car.

You just need the right clockspring and airbag for the car you have.

Definitely wrong, look online, the airbag for single and dual have different connectors that require different airbags

You are not getting what I am saying. You are selling your wheel for the wrong reason.

The clock spring has nothing to do with with steering wheel.

There is a single stage airbag for the early cars that has a single stage clock spring and a dual stage airbag and dual stage clockspring for facelift cars.

The physical steering wheel is the same.

I see you've sold it anyway but sorry to say but you didn't need to.

Both of those wheels use the same clockspring. Just checked real oem.

You can swap all parts. I am swapping the left wheel for the m sport wheel. It's a well documented retrofit.

You need the right airbag yes. But what you are looking for is a single stage airbag to suit your current clock spring.

What year is your car? Does it have single stage or dual stage airbag?

I've searched and looked, people have tried it and it requires re wiring a clockspring. If you can find a link to show you are right I will stand corrected. But without rewiring, it can't be done

Single Stage Airbag for pre 99 cars (with some exceptions)

Screenshot_20250420_222020_com.android.gallery3d.jpg

Dual stage airbag which will need a clockspring with the orange airbag connector.

The steering wheel can be used with any z3. Please note that I have 1997 car so I used a single stage airbag and single stage slip ring with the yellow connector.

The steering wheel is interchangeable, you just need the right slip ring and airbag.

Make sense?

The bit you sent off to Royal to be custom made can be used with dual stage or single stage airbags with the corresponding clock spring.
