I'm Josh from Johnson City, TN. Lots of bimmers under my belt.
I bought a 2000 Z3 2.8 with the M52TU motor, and automatic Trans back in September of last year. I haven't had much opportunity to drive it/work on it until recently and I've been doing my best to straighten out the motor. I bought it very cheap as it was in pretty poor condition mechanically.

I'll run through the list of issues when I got it below.

1. Wet interior, roof leaking horribly, trunk leaking horribly.

2. No Radio power at all.

3. Runs ok, at startup, but after a minute or so (less when it's already warmed up) it starts to miss.

4. Trans slips when cornering.

5.Seats Ripped

6. Driver's seat is stuck, doesn't move at all in any direction.

7. Beige interior is just sad, no other way to describe it. Plastic bits are cracked and broken, the leather is just dirty

8. Brakes are worn, but functional. Probably better to refurb sooner than later.

9. Third Brake light doesn't work

10. Tires are old.

11. Clear coat is oxidizing in a few places like the tops of the doors, and the tops of the mirrors, and along the top of the windscreen frame.

What I've fixed.

1. Sealed were newish, but poorly installed. Once relaligned the interior water stopped mostly, the seals at the top of the door windows are still perished though. Third Brake light seals replaced, and that took care of the trunk water as well.

2. The water from number one seems to have done in my HK amplifier on the right hand side. The one on the left looks functional at the moment, but after unplugging one, and replacing the fuse, the power issue at least is solved. Now I need to recover the radio code that I don't have, or replace the head unit.

3. Done the most work here. Double VANOS rebuild, New intake manifold gasket, New cam sensors, New exhaust Cam solenoid, New O2 sensor on bank 2 pre-cat. New plugs, new intake boots. Still plenty to go, haven't done the water pump, or thermostat, or hoses yet, still need to do the PCV system to deal with some lean codes. New coils coming today. If anyone has any ideas about the described behavior please let me know because as of now I still have the same described problem as above. I have considered that the water intrusion into the cabin or boot might have corroded something besides the stereo amplifier.

4. This just simply lets go when cornering, pulls fine otherwise, and shifts fine as well, I suspect it's just low on fluid. This is the GM 4l30e 4 speed trans. I wish it was a manual, but when shopping for a car this age sometimes you take what you can get.

5. Nothing yet.

6. Nothing yet, unfortunately I'm tall and the seat is all the way up so i head hits the roof when the top is up.

7. Probably looking at vinyl wrapping some of the plastic bits, and maybe replacing one that I can actually get my hands on. I am missing the door handle off the inside driver's door, if anyone has a line on some.

8. Have my eye on a black set, of slotted and drilled rotors, and carbon ceramic pads.

9. I suspect the wiring is shot here, but the plastic in the unit is ruined inside, so who know. They're nonexistent to replace, so ideas here are welcome.

10. Nothing to say here really.

11. I have a friend who will repaint the whole car for $650, $750 if I want to change the color, though I really kind of like the oxford green.

Sorry for the long first post, Just wanted to introduce myself.

Hi Josh, welcome from me near Lincoln UK. You have got a bit to do here but worthwhile having said that. Re the 3rd. brakelight

I suspect the wiring is shot here, but the plastic in the unit is ruined inside, so who know. They're nonexistent to replace, so ideas here are welcome.
As long as the light housing itself is complete you can remove all the original gubbins and install some led strips in place of the individual bulb holders. Walmart sell some excellent really bright Red LED strips for around $30. As long as you have a 12v feed from the other brake lights the LEDs will light, given a good earth point of course. I'll add a picture here later as I have a set of these in my cupboard at home.

You could install either just one or both of the strips, I would go with 2 personally.

Also what miles has the car done Josh. The Auto fluid is supposedly "filled for life" but no one knows what that means really. I changed the Auto. box oil on my 2000 Z3 and changed the filter in the gearbox too. I bought a kit from eBay. Made a good deal of difference to my car, which, I thought was good anyway. These gearboxes are usually very strong.

It turned over 146,000 miles today. I put about 60 on it a day right now. What tends to happen here is, that those particular transmissions are supposed to be filled up, started up and put in gear, and it will then hold ANOTHER 4 qts. I suspect it was drained, and only filled part way up.

On the LEDs the housing itself is broken. I'm an electronics guy, so replacing existing LEDs isn't an issue for me, the unit in it is already LED. I sort of wonder if the water intrusion does something to the plastic that makes it brittle, because the sub box is all to pieces, and all i did was open the lid. Those two things are really the only two things that ACTUALLY worry me about finding replacements for.

I think it's mainly the heat and humidity that causes the damage. Your is the Face-lift model, a used light unit is likely available over here, I had to change mine when some of the LEDs failed.

This is what I found when I opened up the amp. That board attaches the amplifier to the factory connector. The connector is melted, so unless I can find amplifier parts, I'm going aftermarket on this replacement.

Several of the guys this side have modified their ICE I'll tag a couple to see what they can tell you. @Sean d, @Jjim, @Antm72

Tony.

ps. Where is the Amp mounted? If it's in the boot (trunk) it could be well worth checking the so called "loom of doom" which passes by the LH boot lid hinge. As that damage looks like a short issue?

Hi, welcome from Mansfield - UK

Looks like you have a good project to keep you occupied there.

I couldn’t stand the OEM stereo. Replaced with aftermarket head unit, amp, speakers, sub and new cabling throughout. Also added some sound deadening.

The amp is mounted on the left side of the trunk in the normal cars, not sure if it's changed for the RHD models. The HK systems have one on each side.

Mine had definitely been wet, so i don't have much doubt that water was it's downfall.
