So, while test driving my 'new to me' Z, the shifter knob came off in my hand... almost every time I shifted.
Gotta fix that.
Removed the knob, easy... I think it is just friction fit anyway, but mine just pulled right off.

I bought a universal M12 x 1.25 adapter and a generic M12 x 1.25 shifter ball.
They make many types of shifter handles, but some have a hole larger than 12mm and use adapters to size down. I didn't what to deal with plastic adapters. My advice is to look for a shift handle that will screw directly onto the M12 x 1.25 adapter.

I first tried to put the adapter right onto the shift rod... as I pulled the boot up to cover the aluminum shift rod, the whole boot pulled up out of the console... oops.
Actually turned out to be a good thing. I realized that I needed to shorten the shift rod so that the adapter would fit lower and butt up to the leather boot.

Marked the shift rod about 1.25" above the neck and cut it with a hacksaw. Happy to find that it is aluminum and it cut pretty easily.

Then I replaced the boot that seals to the transmission tunnel, put the leather boot back in place, installed the adapter, and screws on the new shift handle.
