After just over a month of careful searching i finally managed to find myself a daily driver.

I was searching for a Honda Jazz and a VW Polo Tdi, but couldn't find any decent examples in my price bracket of either. Saw about 10 until this popped up.

I was I'm Leeds helping a friend settle into uni and saw this Polo for sale, bought it back home today and it drives spot on. It has fsh, it doesn't smoke and cambelt was changed 4k miles ago.

Unfortunately whilst @GazHyde was missing his rear wiper I'm missing the cap for it

Also electric mirror adjustment doesn't work and there's a bit of rust on the arch

Paid £1450, not the cheapest but because it has the history I didn't mind paying extra.

Insurance was another grand.

But it means that the zed can finally rest, after almost two years of chauffeuring me around daily.

That's good for the Zed ! And not bad at all: it's blue, it's German, it's like Zed's little brother!;)
Many miles without problems, I wish you!

Those Polo's are great little cars @Faheem ours has nearly 200k on it now and it's still going strong. It's like a little go cart around town

@Jack Ratt they are really nimble and handle surprisingly well. The car is only a 1.4 tdi but surprisingly torquey. In fact I think it has more torque than my zed.

Just love my daily dub @Faheem keeps the zed special and avoids the 60 motorway mile boring commute. Is it starting to be a prerequisite now @GazHyde #dailydubsquad =))

So, had the car for just over three weeks and have minimal complaints, got 450 miles out of 40 litres of diesel so quite impressed with that. Just over 50MPG.

There's a knock (suspension I think) somewhere under the car and I think it'll also need a new release bearing but as it's under warranty I'll be having the work done next week. Soon the car will have paid for itself in fuel savings. =))

I've had many vw over the years. Several Golfs, a couple of Scirrocco and a Passat. All have been good cars. Almost bought a Passat CC in 2010 but swayed to a Saab at the last minute.

Unfortunately for me it wasn't the clutch or release bearing but rather the gearbox was in its early stages of failure, apparently a gearbox bearing was failing, hence the noise occasionally whilst idling. Thankfully a reconditioned box is going in under warranty and the car should be ready for tomorrow. Suspension noise was indeed the ARB links so nothing too major. Glad the box is getting done under warranty though as that could have been very expensive. The AC is also getting regassed.

Quick update and a question on this pile of poo.

Car has been okay for the past few months since having the reconditioned box fitted, fuel economy is still brilliant, done 4000 miles since I got it mid September...

There has been a brake squeak which seems to have been getting louder over time, thought it could have been the pads being low, the wear indicator rubbing against the discs, the discs being grooved etc... But all looks fine. Lots of thickness left on the pads. So in the end after getting a second opinion I just resorted to turning the radio up.

However, over the past week, I've had three instances (twice today) where I hit the brake and nothing happened until eventually the ABS kicked in, and this is not hard braking or braking on a wet surface... roads were relatively dry today and I was braking like I usually would. It wasn't complete brake failure as I did eventually stop but just felt like I carried on going for a lot longer than I intended before the ABS kicked in and brought me to a halt. Could the wheels have been locking up? Sticking caliper? Brake imbalance? Im just guessing now!

I'll probably be taking the zed to work just to be safe and I have yet to check the fluid levels etc. But any input would be appreciated.

P.S I did have to change both CV joints as there was a noise, O/S had a gaping hole in the rubber boot and water ingress

...so I thought that was the offending joint, however, after changing it the noise was still there, I took the N/S off just to examine it and despite the boot looking brand new and no large holes there was no grease and the metal was severely scored. Thankfully the cv joints were only £20 with the boot!

Here's the N/S
