Hi everyone,

I am an old timer in my 70’s that has recently purchased a 1999 Bright red 2.5 z3. I was amazed that it is geared so low (3.15) with a close ratio 5 speed Getrag transmission. I am from Idaho where the interstate speed is 80 mph. I don’t like seeing the tachometer in the very high 3000 for long periods of time. I was interested in an overdrive transmission of some kind an red a post on this site that was very interesting. I was a mechanic for many years and have no problem with major projects. Hopefully someone here may have information that will help.

Thanks to all for this great site,

JayMe

WOW, I am a pilot also, I love your logo. Do you have any advice that may work in the U.S.? Did it have a significant reduction in RPM at rod speed? Thanks in advance for anything you have to offer.

Thanks for your reply,

JayMe

Hi. Sadly I was to academically challenged to be a pilot so I had to be a firefighter instead and put them out when they crashed. I'll try and find the thread and put it in here.

Some useful info in this thread, post #37 onwards ref 6 speed gearbox.

Hi JayMe and :welcome: from Surre,y UK. If you are only in your seventies, you don't qualify as an old timer yet. :)

Welcome JayMe from another newbie - 82yo with recent purchase of 97 Z3 1.9L. Unfortunately, I cannot advise on your project as I don't have high RMP/speed problem as I am still working on getting it started ;)

Welcome to the Forum, all you will ever need to know can be found on here.
As we are Worldwide its a good idea to update your User details to show your location and exact model of your car so these details appear to the left of your posts. It assists us in answering questions and saves you typing them in each time you post a thread.

As a new comer I am still finding my way around all of this and I also did not give enough personal information. Most people (even in the USA) have not heard of Idaho let alone people from other parts of the world. Idaho is a western state with a small population and a lot of open road and a lot of curve mountain roads also. Let me apologize in advance if I don't reply or reply inappropriately to anyone or anything. I haven't done this kind of thing before.
Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome,
JayMe

There was/is a company that sold/manufactures a boost and 6 speed overdrive kit in the us. It was about 10k when I was drooling over it a few years ago but after looking at your pic, seems doable. I will try and find the info. They do/did make them to order.
