The government is considering changing the MOT to every 2 years............your thoughts?

Personally, I think it is a great idea, I'm pretty sure this is already the case in France.
The annual MOT was introduced in 1967. Cars of this era needed UJ's and bearing regularly repacked with grease, the servicing list was endless and the intervals much shorter. The cars of the era also had very few sensors and warning systems. Cars nowadays tell you that something has gone wrong even before you know it.
The only thing that catches me out is tyre wear, surely it wouldn't be hard to have a layer of red rubber on the tyre that would show when the tyre became worn and needed replacing. Would increase tyre sales as well for the tyre companies.

Not adverse to every 2 years, but no doubt the cost will increase so garages dont miss out :)

Regards the tyres, there's already indicators on them for when they need replacing - the cynic in me would suggest the tyre comapnies would put red rubber well in, so you'd replace them before needed. The same as some brake pads that used to warn of replacement with 25%+ remaining.

They talked about this before about going to 4-2-2 instead of 3-1-1 but the idea was binned mainly due to current failure rates nationwide amongst other things I hadn't heard anything about it being spoken about again, in UK Northern Ireland since 2021 they have been carrying out a feasibility study on this.
From personal experience I would say this is a bad idea as people really don't take care of their cars.
When we had the first lockdown in 2020 mot were 6 months extended from March till August so all the march cars were now due in September up to the August cars now due December.
So that meant the fair majority of these cars were now a year and a half since previous mot .
The failure rate took a big spike also the amount of dangerous failures also increased considerably.
So for me as an active tester it would be a no from me .
Stephen.
