That's alright then... the small turbo seems to have gone on the 123d!!

Ouch. That sounds expensive :(
Hopefully it's just a boost pipe or something like that. I have to admit it's strange when you have no power, until the second turbo kicks in about 3000 rpm!!!

Have read that there are two by-pass valves on the small turbo. One inlet side and one exhaust side. These redirect the air from the small to the larger turbo. If one of those is stuck you're only using the large turbo. Any codes shown up?

It could be a waste gate stuck open. I had the on my old Audi. That had vanes around the turbo to manage the air inlet side. They were driven by a vacuum operated mechanism. The problem was the vanes were sticking open causing overboost and then dumping all the boost out the wastegate. Made it very odd and difficult to drive.

Sorry to have taken over the thread @t-tony !

I'm off the week after next so will be having a look (although that was to properly sort the coupe). I have the BMW DIS/INPA software so will be taking a peek at the codes.

In the meantime I've stuck some supreme diesel and redex in the tank so I'll see how that goes!
