I was wondering what you guys thought of an early Merc SLK roadster as a potential buy? The one with the bonnet that looks like a f1 car.

I was looking at one before I bought the Z. Put off by most being auto, and a friend advised the steering was awful, he’d hated it, was slow if not the supercharged one. Headlights all need polishing and the alloys need refurbishing.

I have owned and driven four Mercs and can honestly post that I have never experienced problems with the brake pipes.

The worst car I have ever seen for rust was my wife's Fiat Panda, that dissolved in front of your eyes.

I was seriously looking for one of these before buying my Z3. I hadn't even considered a Z3 until someone at work suggested it, within a few weeks I owned one. The main reason I was looking at one was because Shirl had just bought her first Eos and I liked the folding roof mechanism, which, I have never heard have any problems.

Mate has a SLK and on the top and interior is excellent, last MOT they pointed out severe corrossion on the rear subframe, needed replacing big hit on the wallet.

I remember Ed replacing the supercharger on one on the WD program.

Its a sign you've given up! I drove one before I drove a Z3, which one do you think I bought? 😉

I drove one at a track day session and found it heavy and not particularly dynamic. A colleague traded his Alfa Spider in for one though.
The one to look out for is a Kleeman. It's an SL55 AMG with added supercharger, speed limited to 186mph. (Just checked on their website).

A friend owns a Kleeman S6 SLK.
It’s left hand drive, has 600hp and even with all of the traction aids on full will spin the rear wheels at 70mph if you boot it. Absolutely mental to drive in the dry, terrifying in the wet. Sounds amazing.
When the gearbox needed work it had to have a software update done by Kleeman and at one point it looked like he’d have to ship it over to them.
He does also have a Z3, albeit as a kit car base.

I was once complaining about how my 1973 BMW was rusting and was told “Mate, even the glass eventually rusts on these cars”. I didn’t keep the car long enough to find out
