I am surprised people even know how to use that timing light.. does it come with a bottle of tipex

No mate, I used to keep a white touch up paint stick to mark the timing marks. Also had a multimeter which had a "dwell angle" scale but that's also a foreign language these days. A lot of French and some Italian distributors has adjustable contacts which you could adjust while the motor was running. Much better the the Lucas ones we had.

And the best part, even though we didn't know it at the time, was that usually you could get an engine running
well enough to get home.
