You hear about de-cat pipes, you hear about people taking their cats off, cutting the top open and taking the guts out and welding the hole closed and fitting it back with the cut on the top so it's out of sight. You hear of people doing the same with DPF's on diesels nowadays so that it appears to still have one fitted. Well those days are numbered if what I was told on Thursday comes to pass, and I think it will, sooner rather than later. The D.V.S.A. (in conjunction with the EEC no doubt) are planning to introduce an exhaust system pressure test as well as emission test to ensure that ALL of the required parts of an exhaust system are present.

I was always under the impression that if you messed with your exhaust it would show up on the emissions test part of the MOT hence a failure, unless your driving a pre cat veh. Tony ?????

No, not always Roy. Some cars are clean enough to pass the test without a cat, the point is though that they run even cleaner with one. That's why they're there.

I would love to know how they plan to perform a pressure test..... you can only seal off one end with the tester, so whatever leakage they measure will be leaking through the exhaust valves and back into the cylinders and out of the intake. It's almost impossible to do, and certainly not a universal test for all road cars!

If it wasn't viable they would not be wasting their time trying to find the way. All systems have a certain amount of back pressure which is what they're after measuring to my understanding.

Tony.

ps. It will only be a test for cars fitted with DPF's and Cat's after a certain date and will never impact the Z's. The aim is to stop people F*****g with emissions systems on newer cars.

That's OK - all you need to do is stick the probe up another car's pipe ;)

I was actually quite pleased when I took mine back in for a re test yesterday (it failed on emissions) and they did the test properly. It passed this time thankfully, and it was nice to know what I'd done actually did the trick. I don't really believe in the idea of having a garage 'you know' where you can get an MOT. Some of the stuff on there is a bit pointless, but then there are also parts that are there for a very good reason.

Really, that's a terrible thing to do! :rolleyes:Joking apart tho this seems to be quite a common issue, I think we ort to all chip in and set our resident @t-tony up with his own mot station. I'm sure the emissions issue would be a thing of the past!!!:D
