Then just get over to the mainland wherever and roam! Absolute best way to see things off the beaten path and with no timetable you'll always be on time. Everywhere there's restaurants, hotels, etc. drive when you want stop when you want and the young fellow will never forget a second of this trip. Ask the locals and you'll find places most tourists never see, eat foods you've never tried, sleep where you've never slept.! Just go for it!! JIM

Drove round Northern Spain quite a bit. There is an excellent Motorway just been built between Leida and Barcalona. Sitges is a nice place to visit. From San Sebastien you could venture into the Pyrenees going across to Leida

I think you'll find this very satisfying @Grumpy. During our European travels we stayed in Gast Hofs, army barracks, slept over a barn in a private residence and many more private accommodations. We avoided Autobahns unless we decided to gain some ground quickly but mostly it was back roads to small villages and asked what the attractions were of the locals and if they knew somewhere we could sleep. Always had success. Went through a salt mine up in a mountain in the Alps wearing traditional miners clothing in Austria, absolutely fantastic spot. Visited castles off the beaten path and never knew what displays they'd have going on. Carriage museum in Holland was exceptional. If we missed a turn we went to see what was down that street or road and adjusted accordingly.! Try it, you'll love it!! JIM

I find that booking one night at a time not only means you always have a room for that night but allows you to alter your plans if (for example) the weather turns bad in the direction you initially intended. It also means you can get a better room rate (than the rack rate) as you can use hotels.com, laterooms, or booking.com who usually have the same room at a lower price.

We would have suffered 4 days of solid rain in Germany last year but having the flexibility to change, we went north instead of south and kept above a nasty weather front.

We find accommodation with Wi-fi, stick a pin in Google maps and draw a circle for the distance we're looking to drive the next day and book somewhere near the edge of that circle. Touch-wood, it's never let us down....................................yet.

The technology has changed dramatically since I last travelled overseas. In those days in Germany the people with space put signs " Zimmer Frei" in a window and if they were unable to accomodate they sent you to a relative that could and like I said we've slept in all kinds of accommodations. Always breakfast was included and was VERY cheap. We stayed several times with the same families on subsequent trips and made life long friends along the way! So go and enjoy!! It's wonderful not being tied down. In one instance in Bavaria we walked into a restaurant three years later and the waiter walked over with the exact brand of beer and wine we drank as he recognized us. Spent a couple of hours catching up with what his family had done as well as ours. Love it!!! JIM
