So this Zed came in for a quick n dirty but once up in the air we realised this needed a lot more love. Long story short she’s spent most of her life in Scotland and I’m guessing somewhere near the coast, I don’t think I’ve seen this much corrosion on a 70k mile car.

So we don’t waste the time not doing the quick n dirty we prepped the car, removed all the crispy bolts and even fitted a new diff bush.

front shocks are a new record for me. How these pass an MOT every year is mind boggling.

So chatting with Billy abs we decided to do the quick n dirty but also replace as much as we could in a short time. Today we made a good start.

Blows my mind this is 70k miles. We also replaced all the rear brake lines. Old ones were all goosed

Ready to go back in.

Hopefully close of play this weekend we should have addressed the main mechanical issues. Will then look to sort the oil leaks.

Crikey. And I thought mine was crispy. MoT man always comments about how crispy my bits are. I thought I was some kind of crispy-rights activist.

After seeing the beam and trailing arms on that one above I'm thoroughly demoralized. May as well get my wire brush out now. Bah!

I knew she wouldn't be great under there but I didn't think this bad!!
Looking forward to coming down tomorrow to see in the flakey flesh and optimistically hoping that rust always looks worse in pics than in reality!!!

Today was a solid effort all round. Two full days to get this Zed up together. Will still have a fair few advisories once the MOT is done but least it won’t feel unsafe to drive.

First job was coating lots of rusty bits in K-rust to at least slow the process down. Then we refitted the subframe and hang her on new Sachs shocks. We also have new brake lines front to back.
IMG_4379.jpeg

IMG_4378.jpeg

next we fitted the prop shaft and shield
IMG_4380.jpeg

Last few jobs on the rear, first one fitting new rear drop links. Made me laugh getting these apart
IMG_4382.jpeg

IMG_4383.jpeg

Only the brake to bleed at the rear now so I moved to the front. This needed new tie & track rods along with shocks, we also did new callipers up front too.
IMG_4385.jpeg

IMG_4387.jpeg

IMG_4386.jpeg

Never seen shocks like that before.

Much better now
IMG_4388.jpeg

IMG_4389.jpeg

Couple other little jobs like replacing various tabs so we can fully attached the undertray
IMG_4391.jpeg

End of the day I finally did a test drive and she’s so much better. Just MOT and tracking now. She’s now at least safe to drive but still on that long road to recovery.

Another one that looks amazing above the water line..it must be a Topaz blue thing 😁
Can’t believe the last MOT didn’t mention the shocks once.
They should have just stopped here with the advisories . 🤣

You could apply that comment to many older vehicles, including Z3s and possibly Z4 too as the vast majority aren’t owned and run by enthusiasts. The only variable is the amount of corrosion.

Tony.

Did the last few jobs today. Rocker gasket being the main one, she was very leaky. I also fitted a new Ariel grommet and she’s now got a fresh MOT.

Every car tells its story when you have a peak inside. You can see this car has had some time sat around. Just look at the rust on the cams.
IMG_4416.jpeg

IMG_4417.jpeg
IMG_4419.jpeg

Also dug out some large chunks of old oil. Again a sign that it’s had big gaps between its servicing.
IMG_4420.jpeg

After giving everything a clean she was ready for re assembly. If your eagle eyed you’ll see my trick for keeping the rocker gasket in place so it don’t fall
IMG_4422.jpeg

With cable ties on they’re easy to snip and pull the long end out. Nice n easy takes 30 seconds to do.
IMG_4423.jpeg

Car is now ready for collection. She drives really nice now, done a fair few miles now so I’m happy she’s ready for the road again.

Was the leak discovered before or after Dino's car spent some time under its Scottish cousin ?

Finally after years of study and on high level projects @Lee has leant some proper engineering and introduced cable ties to the his work

Wait until you see the wonders of stainless steel ties…(seriously useful for hold an exhaust up when the hanger breaks!)

I’ll happily sit on the board as ‘Chief Cable Tie Operating Officer’ (CCTOO, even has a nice ring to it..)
